Bowling Preview: NCAA Championship

4/9/2026 10:25:00 AM

PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Wichita State takes aim at the program's first NCAA National Championship this week at Yorktown Lanes.

Prior to joining the NCAA ranks last season, WSU won a record 11 Intercollegiate Team Championship (ITC) national titles, most recently in 2024. The Shockers also won national titles in 1975, 1977, 1978, 1986, 1990, 1994, 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2021.

The Shockers square off with #1 overall seed Jacksonville State on Friday morning at 8:00 am CT to begin the Final Four competition, a rematch of last season's Championship-opening match. On the opposite side of the bracket, Arkansas State battles Vanderbilt.

Wichita State went 0-2 in the Championship last season, falling to Jacksonville State and Nebraska in Las Vegas. The competition is double-elimination, meaning the Shockers will bowl twice on Friday regardless of the first match's outcome. If WSU finishes 2-0 on Friday, they will earn a bye to the National Championship match on Saturday night. A 1-1 showing on Friday means the Shockers will bowl again Saturday morning at 8:00 am CT to secure a spot in the final.

All matches prior to the final will stream live on NCAA.com. The final is scheduled to air live on ESPNU at 5:30 pm CT.

Just like in the regional round, the Final Four is structured in a best-of-three match format, known as a Mega Match. Teams will bowl one traditional five-person game for total pinfall, then five Baker games for total pinfall. If one team wins both the traditional match and Baker match, they advance. If the two teams split the standard and Baker matches, they will move on to a best-of-seven series of Baker games. The National Championship match on Saturday is just a best-of-seven Baker match.
  • Match 1: Five-person team match
  • Match 2: Baker Total Pinfall
  • Match 3: Baker Best-of-Seven Match play (if necessary)
Wichita State brings a 77-34 record into the Championship after winning four straight matches to claim the Arlington Regional championship. The Shockers are 2-3 this season against Jacksonville State, 0-5 vs. Vanderbilt and 2-4 versus Arkansas State.
