PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Wichita State's remarkable run through the NCAA tournament came to an end in the National Championship on Saturday night, as the Shockers fell to #1-seed Jacksonville State 4-1 in the best-of-seven Baker match at Yorktown Lanes.
The Shockers finished their second NCAA campaign with a 79-36 record as NCAA runner-up. Jacksonville State won their second NCAA championship in the last three seasons, finishing 103-10.
Much like in the Arlington Regional, Wichita State had to battle back from an early defeat to even reach the championship match. The Shockers dropped their first mega match of the Final Four to Jacksonville State on Friday, losing the traditional point by the score of 1,165-1,049 and the Baker in an incredible back-and-forth battle, 1,198-1,162.
That defeat sent Wichita State to the elimination bracket, where they kept their season alive on Friday afternoon with a 2-0 win over #3-seed Arkansas State. The victory was highlighted by a 300 game from
Aleesha Oden in the traditional match, the first perfect game in NCAA Final Four history. Oden's flawless performance powered WSU to a comfortable 1,162-949 win, then the Shockers dominated the Baker match with a huge 1,188-1,030 victory to eliminate the Red Wolves and advance to Saturday.
WSU squared off with Vanderbilt on Saturday morning, a team that had beaten the Shockers five consecutive times entering the match. It appeared the Commodores were well on their way to extending that streak with a 1,106-1,027 victory in the traditional stanza, but the Shockers did not go quietly. They hung on for a 1,038-992 decision in the Baker match, forcing a best-of-seven with a trip to the championship on the line. Vanderbilt rallied for a 225-212 win to open the battle, but WSU took the next three games by scores of 225-224, 247-235 and 256-244 to put them on the doorstep.
Vanderbilt stayed alive with a resounding 274-200 win in game five, but the Shockers pulled away early in the sixth game for a 269-207 victory and a berth in the National Championship.
Against the Gamecocks, WSU struck first, winning 216-208, but Jacksonville State took control from there with four consecutive game victories to secure the title: 246-213, 240-196, 185-169, 191-184.
Aleesha Oden earned All-Tournament honors for the Shockers. Jacksonville State's Erin Klemencic was named Most Outstanding Player, one of three Gamecocks on the All-Tournament Team alongside Avery Domaguin of Vanderbilt.
