WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State stranded 10 baserunners and allowed seven two-out runs in an 8-1 defeat to Nebraska on Tuesday night at Eck Stadium.
The Shockers (15-7) and Huskers (15-5) traded zeroes for each of the first two innings before Nebraska struck with two outs in the third. Five consecutive Huskers reached base after two outs and nobody one, including an RBI single from Jett Buck and a two-run single from Case Sanderson that staked Nebraska to a 3-0 lead.
Wichita State got their lone run in the fourth when
MJ Sweeney led off the inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from
Kaleb Duncan that trimmed the Nebraska lead to 3-1.
Buck knocked home another run with an RBI single in the fifth, then Dylan Carey got in on the act with a two-out infield single in the seventh that produced another run for a 5-1 advantage.
The Shockers had their best chance to get back into the game in the eighth, loading the bases on an error, a double and a walk against Nebraska reliever Colin Nowaczyk. But the Huskers summoned right-hander J'Shawn Unger, who struck out the next two batters to preserve the lead.
Nebraska then tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth to produce the final margin, and Unger pitched around a one-out infield single in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.
Cooper Katskee (3-0) picked up the win for Nebraska, allowing one run over 5.0 innings with four strikeouts. Wichita State starter
Ethan Rogers (0-2) took the loss, allowing four hits and three runs in 2.2 innings. Unger picked up his second save for the Huskers.
The two teams conclude the double midweek series on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 pm CT.
