Shockers Drop Midweek Contest to Nebraska

WICHITA, Kan. -- Nebraska scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back on the way to a 10-1 win over Wichita State on Wednesday afternoon at Eck Stadium.

The Shockers (15-8) were held to just three hits and had 16 consecutive hitters retired to end the game.

The Huskers (16-5) used two singles, two walks, two hit by pitches and an error to strike for four in the first inning against Wichita State starter Reese Kortum (2-1), who recorded just one out in the inning before being lifted. Single runs in the second and fourth innings extended Nebraska's lead to 6-0 before the Shockers got their lone run in the bottom of the inning courtesy of an RBI double from Owen Rush against Nebraska starter Pryce Bender.

Bender worked the first four innings, allowing three hits and a run, before handing it off to the bullpen. The combination of five Nebraska relievers did not allow a baserunner over the final five innings and struck out 11. Tucker Timmerman (1-0) earned the win as the first reliever into the game, working two shutout frames.

A two-run homer from Drew Grego in the seventh and a two-run double from Case Sanderson in the eighth produced the final margin.

The Shockers are back in action with the start of American Conference play on Friday against Charlotte. First pitch of the series opener at Eck Stadium is scheduled for 6:05 pm CT.
