Shockers Roll the Wave behind Battie, Boyd

NEW ORLEANS - Dillon Battie and Karon Boyd combined for 37 points to lead Wichita State in a dominant road win at Tulane, 75-61, Sunday afternoon.

Wichita State (15-9, 7-4) improved to 5-2 all time on Super Bowl Sunday, including two straight on the big day. The win also keeps the Shockers right in the thick of the conference race, just one game back of first place Tulsa and South Florida. The Bulls come to Koch Arena Wednesday night for a massive showdown.

Battie poured in a career-high 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting and a career-high tying nine rebounds. He also added three steals. Boyd tallied his fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds. He was 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Wichita State dominated the glass, outrebounding the Green Wave, 45-31. The Shockers also dished out 17 assists and forced 14 turnovers - nine of those resulting in steals.

Wichita State's free throw struggles continued as they converted just 10-of-19 attempts.

The Shockers held Tulane to 35.8 percent from the field, and made life frustrating for the Green Wave's leading scorer Rowan Brumbaugh. Brumbaugh averages nearly 20 points a game, but finished with 17 on 4-of-13 shooting.

Tulane opened quickly, using early perimeter shooting to take an 8-4 lead, but Wichita State settled in behind its defense and interior play.

A key first-half sequence midway through the period swung momentum. After forcing a turnover, Brian Amuneke buried a transition three to put the Shockers in front by six. Wichita State continued to grind out stops and pushed the lead to five at halftime when Boyd knocked down a late three, sending Wichita State to the locker room ahead 31-26.

The Shockers wasted no time creating separation after the break.

Just 18 seconds into the second half, Boyd drilled another three to extend the lead to eight and ignite the decisive run. Wichita State steadily stretched the margin into double figures and eventually pushed the lead to 18 midway through the half.

Tulane never got closer than six the rest of the way.
