NEW CASTLE, Del. -- The Wichita State women's bowling team opened the spring semester with an impressive showing at the Northeast Classic, securing third place in the loaded 36-team field at Bowlerama in New Castle. The Shockers also combined on their first Baker 300 game in NCAA program history, achieving perfection in Sunday's win over Maryville.
#1-ranked Jacksonville State took home the team title, defeating Vanderbilt in the championship match.Â
Ashtyn Woods (212.2 average) led the Shockers individually, finishing 20th and posting the top individual game with a 258.
Aleesha Oden (201.4 - 36th) and
Paige Wagner (200.4 - 41st) also snagged top-50 finishes as fixtures in the Shocker lineup.
Madi Phillips added scores of 225 and 222 to aid the Wichita State cause.
Jacksonville State's Gianna Brandolino cruised to MVP honors, posting a 245.2 average that was more than eight pins better than runner-up Katelyn Abigania of Vanderbilt.
The Shockers (49-16) stormed out of the gates in Friday's Baker matches, going 5-0 and leading the field in total pinfall. Wichita State bested Howard (1,142-739), #24 Delaware State (979-851), #9 Mount St. Mary's (1,051-881), Molloy (1,047-869) and Maryland Eastern Shore (1,082-968). The 403-pin win over Howard was the fourth-largest Baker margin of victory in Wichita State's NCAA history.
It was an up-and-down showing in Saturday's traditional matches, as the Shockers went 3-2 with wins over #22 Duquesne, Morgan State and #23 Kutztown sandwiched around losses to #13 North Carolina A&T and UAB. Those results dropped WSU back into fourth place in total pinfall heading into bracket play on Sunday.
In the opening round of the best-of-seven format, Wichita State fell into a quick 2-0 hole against #10 Maryville, but stormed back to knock off the Saints, 4-2, with help from the 300 in game four. The Shockers closed out the win by the narrowest of margins, hanging on for a 181-180 victory in game six. #2 Vanderbilt bested the Shockers in the next round, 4.5-2.5, sending Wichita State to the third-place match against #3 Arkansas State. Locked in a 2-2 tie, WSU took control with a 246-200 win in game five and put the match away with a 213-211 decision in game six.
The Shockers have a short turnaround before their next competition, heading down to Arlington, Texas for the Prairie View A&M Invitational at the International Training and Research Center. The tournament begins Friday, January 23 and concludes Sunday, January 25.
