Shockers to Host 2024 AAC Volleyball Tournament

5/31/2024 11:36:00 AM

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State volleyball team announced their 16-match American Athletic Conference schedule on Friday, culminating in the 2024 AAC Tournament at Charles Koch Arena from November 22-24.

The conference has not held a postseason volleyball tournament since the 2020 championship season, which took place in the spring of 2021. The Shockers earned the right to host the championship by virtue of a second-place finish during the 2023 season; regular season champion SMU has since departed for the ACC.

The 16-match conference schedule is evenly split, with eight home and road contests. The Shockers are set to host Temple, Rice, South Florida, Florida Atlantic, Memphis, UAB, Tulsa and UTSA, while traveling to Memphis, UAB, Charlotte, East Carolina, Tulsa, Rice, Tulane and North Texas. With 13 teams competing in 2024, the AAC has abandoned the two-division system utilized last season.

Wichita State opens the 2024 AAC slate with the first match of the conference season on Wednesday, September 25 at Memphis. The conference home opener is that Friday, September 27 against Temple. From week two onward, the Shockers play Friday and Sunday, a change from the conference's schedule format after Friday-Saturday matches in 2023.

WSU has a pair of two-match homestands in conference action, welcoming South Florida and Florida Atlantic on October 11 and 13, respectively, before hosting Memphis and UAB on October 25 and 27. The Shockers road swings are at Charlotte and East Carolina (October 18/20) and at Rice and Tulane (November 8/10).

The Shockers wrap up AAC play at home against UTSA on Sunday, November 17.

The AAC tournament begins Friday, November 22 and concludes with the conference's championship match on Sunday, November 24. The AAC's top eight teams qualify for the single-elimination tournament.

The American previously held tournaments in both 2019 and 2020, though the Shockers did not appear in either competition.

The Shockers are coming off a 26-8 season in 2023 capped off by a dominant run to the NIVC title, the program's first national postseason tournament championship. All-Conference selections Morgan Stout and Izzi Strand return to the roster in 2024, in addition to outside hitters Emerson Wilford and Brooklyn Leggett and a group of veteran defensive specialists led by Annalie Heliste, Katie Galligan and Reagan Anderson. Head coach Chris Lamb enters his 25th season at the helm in 2024 with 508 career wins, just the ninth active NCAA coach to reach 500 victories at a single school.
