Shockers Snap Losing Streak with Home Win Over Memphis

WICHITA – Four Shockers finished in double figures as Wichita State snapped its four-game losing streak, defeating Memphis, 71-66, Wednesday evening in Charles Koch Arena.

"We've really been focused a lot on making sure we get better every single day and the results will come, so I was happy for today," head coach Terry Nooner said. "It was a total collective effort."

Sophomore Daniela Abies recorded her third double-double of the season, leading the Shockers (6-12, 2-4 AAC) with 18 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. She shot 9-for-11 (.818) from the field for the second time this season.

Tre'Zure Jobe finished the game with 17 points, Jayla Murray tied her career high with 12, and freshman Salese Blow scored 11 for the Shockers.

The WIchita State defense held Memphis (5-12, 1-5 AAC) to just 24-for-69 (.348) from the field and 3-for-19 (.158) from three. The Shockers contained Memphis's Madison Griggs, who averaged 17.3 points per game coming into the night, to just 11 points, and Wichita State won the battle of the boards, 47-35.

The Shockers dominated the paint, scoring 50 points inside to claim their second American Athletic Conference victory and move up two spots to 11th in the conference standings.

Memphis took an eight-point lead after the first quarter as the Shockers had another slow start on offense, turning the ball over on three of their first five possessions.

Wichita State held the Tigers to just eight points in the second quarter, though, its best defensive quarter since the Nov. 24 game against Akron, and went on a 22-4 run before halftime to take an eight-point lead.

The Shockers increased their lead to 13 in the third quarter, but Memphis made it interesting by going on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to six.

The Shockers held on as the TIgers clawed their way to within three with one minute remaining in regulation, but a defensive stop and a big rebound by Aniya Bell, along with a made free throw by Blow and another by Jobe, secured the win for Wichita State.

This marks the Shockers' first win of 2024 and first win since their 63-60 conference opener win over Tulane.

Wichita State heads to Tulsa in search of its first true road win on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. in the Reynolds Center.
