Sams Snags Four Top-Three Finishes at Rock Chalk Classic

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Zarrey Sams secured four top-three finishes and recorded two personal bests, leading the Shockers at the Rock Chalk Classic Saturday at Rock Chalk Park. This meet marks the final meet before the conference championship for many Wichita State athletes.
 
The junior from Houston, Texas won the long jump with a personal-best jump of 6.15m/20'2.25", her first time over 20 feet, etching her name on Wichita State's all-time list at No. 7. In the middle of the long jump competition, Sams snuck away to run the second leg of the second-place 4x100-meter relay that ran a season-best 45.90 (Faith Turner, Sams, Sydney Johnson, Savannah Simmons).
 
Shortly after, Sams came back for the triple jump competition, where she placed second with a jump of 12.07m/39'7.25" and slipped away again to run the seventh-fastest 100-meter hurdles race in school history, placing third with a time of 13.70.
 
Joseph Holthusen also had a successful day, running a personal-best 10.66 to finish third in the 100 meters and placing second in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.16. Holthusen led off the 4x100-meter relay (Holthusen, Joakim Genereux, Bryan Haney, Jaleel Montgomery), which recorded the seventh-fastest time in program history (40.69) to place fourth.
 
Genereux went on to win the 200 meters with a time of 21.09. Also recording top-three finishes, Yuben Goncalves ran a 52.19 to place second in the 400-meter hurdles and Harry Barthelemy placed second in the triple jump (14.39m/47'2.5") in his first competition after injury.
 
The Shockers swept the high jump competitions with Marissa Jensen opening the meet with a 1.74m/5'8.5" clearance to get the win in the women's competition, and Brady Palen following with a 2.16m/7'1" jump to claim victory in the men's competition. Mattelyn Swartz and Tess Roman jumped 1.65m/5'5" to finish second and fourth, respectively.
 
In the javelin, Samantha Marx threw a personal-best 44.84m/147'1", the 10th best throw in Shocker history, to place second, and Luke Porter threw an almost 5-meter personal best to finish fourth in the event (55.10m/180'9").
 
Jenna Muma added to the Shockers' successful steeplechase week with a win, running a personal-best 11:07.59.
 
To wrap up the running events, Lubna Aldulaimi (17:30.70) and Sarah Bertry (17:51.02) finished second and third in the 5,000 meters, respectively, and Adrian Diaz-Lopez made his return to the track, placing third in the 5K in 14:49.30.
 
The Shockers return home for the Shocker Open, where the team will hold a senior day recognition Friday, May 5 at Cessna Stadium.
