Navajon Repeats as Heptathlon Champion, 11 Shockers Named All-Conference on Day Two

2/25/2023 8:24:00 PM

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Adria Navajon dominated the heptathlon, landing atop the podium for the third-consecutive American Athletic Conference multi-event competition Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Navajon led the Shocker men to a fourth-place team finish, just 0.5 points behind third, scoring 17 of their 102 points, while the Wichita State women placed 10th as a team with 25.75 points.

Cincinnati won its first men's team title and UCF repeated as women's team champions with 143 and 132.25 points, respectively.

The sophomore from Barcelona, Spain scored 5,641 heptathlon points over the two-day competition, recording top marks in five of the seven events. He improved his No. 5 all-time WSU mark in the event and repeated as the AAC indoor champion. Nate Vann joined him on the podium with 4,999 points for a third-place finish with both Shockers earning all-conference honors. The heptathlon group scored a total of 26 points for the team with Hudson Bailey, Kolby Caster and Wyatt Leutzinger placing fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively.

Navajon also earned all-conference honors in the 60-meter hurdles, placing third with a time of 8.08 in between heptathlon events after breaking the meet record in the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles (8.12) earlier in the day.

As the lone Shocker woman to make a running event final, Farrah Miller raced to the third-fastest 800-meter time in school history, running 2:08.80 to place third and earn all-conference recognition.

In the men's high jump, Brady Palen and Weston Lewis earned podium finishes in an extremely tough competition with South Florida's Romaine Beckford who ultimately cleared the third-highest bar in the NCAA (2.26m/7'5") this year to win the event. Palen cleared 2.20m/7'2.5" for second place, and Lewis joined the seven-foot club with a personal-best clearance of 2.14m/7'0.25" for third.

The Shocker women scored 5.75 points in the high jump, courtesy of Marissa Jensen's fifth-place performance and Destiny Masters' and Mattelyn Swartz's seventh and eighth-place finishes, respectively.

After getting jostled around in the first lap of the 3,000 meters, school record holder Adrian Diaz-Lopez stayed on his feet and maintained his composure, clocking the second-fastest time in Shocker history (behind his own school record) to place second in 7:55.06 and be named to the all-conference list.

The Shockers' secret weapon horizontal jumper, Yuben Goncalves, earned all-conference honors in the triple jump after only competing in one meet the rest of the indoor season. Goncalves leapt out to the seventh-farthest mark in program history, jumping 15.28m/50'1.75" for a second-place podium finish.

The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Joakim Genereux, RJ Hutchison, Bryan Haney and JD Prinsloo clocked the sixth-fastest time in school history, running 3:14.00 to finish third and wrap up the meet with another podium finish.
