Shockers Wrap Up Day One of Shocker Spring Invite

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State track and field team claimed four event titles on day one of the Shocker Spring Invitational Friday at Cessna Stadium.
 
Michael Bryan picked up the first win of the day for the Shockers, throwing 67.79m/222-5 on his fifth attempt in the hammer throw. Samantha Marx also found success in the hammer, taking third with a throw of 48.55m/159-3. Marx followed that up with a javelin win, throwing 40.04m/131-4, with Kourtni Hubert and Erika Hoag placing second and third, respectively, to complete the event sweep for the Shockers. In the men's javelin, Davis Dubbert made his outdoor debut, finishing second with a toss of 59.30m/194-7.
 
The multi-event athletes completed day one of the decathlon and heptathlon with Tanner Brown leading the men's competition with 3,958 points and Brianna Utecht atop the women's leaderboard with 3,081 points. Brown's first day was highlighted by a wind-aided lifetime best 10.38 in the 100 meters and an outdoor personal-best 1.96m/6-5 in the high jump. He also recorded the top time in the 400 meters, clocking a 50.44. Utecht was consistent across the board, claiming the top spot in all four day one events.
 
The distance runners capped off the night under the lights, snagging the final two wins of the meet. Britte Magnuson opened up his outdoor season with a 9:32.01 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, almost 20 seconds faster than his season-opener last spring. Trey Rios claimed victory in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:27.90 with Ben Flowers following closely with an 8:28.67 to take third. Abeba Sullivan, Lubna Aldulaimi and Miranda Dick placed second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,000 meters, finishing behind Shocker alumna Rebekah Topham.
 
Day two of the meet gets underway Saturday at 11 a.m.
