LAST TIME OUT
Wichita State dropped to 1-3 in league play following a road loss at Tulane last Saturday, 67-52. The Shockers led by as many as 11 in the opening quarter and took a one-point lead into halftime, but Tulane outscored Wichita State 28-13 in the third quarter to take control. Wichita State committed 22 turnovers in the game, resulting in 22 points for the Green Wave. DJ McCarty got the start at point guard with Seraphine Bastin out of action due to injury and scored a team-best 14 points to go with five rebounds and two steals. Jane Asinde added 10 points and nine rebounds. She scored six of her 10 points at the free throw line. Asia Strong was held scoreless for the first time this season.

SCOUTING THE PIRATES
East Carolina is 8-10 overall to begin the 2021-22 campaign and 1-4 in American Athletic Conference play. East Carolina is led by Taniyah Thompson who posts 16.7 points and 4.4 rebounds a game to go with 32 steals. Thompson is the second leading scorer in the American Athletic Conference, while also leading the league in field goals made and attempted and in total points. East Carolina also boasts the conference's top shot blocker in Tylar Bennett. Bennett's 32 blocks rank first in the American and 38th nationally. The Pirates are known for their defense and creating turnovers. They rank 11th in the nation in steals and 10th in turnovers forced. East Carolina is also a top 30 team in offensive rebounds, blocks and free throw attempts.

THE SERIES VS. EAST CAROLINA
Wichita State and ECU have met six times prior to Tuesday's showdown with both teams winning three apiece. ECU won the first two meetings only to see Wichita State take the next three. The Pirates even the series with a win in Greenville last year. Wichita State is 2-0 vs. ECU in Charles Koch Arena.

LAST MEETING
Wichita State and ECU met only once in 2021 due to COVID-19 canceling the other matchup. The Pirates used a 30-11 third quarter to pull away with a 74-59 win in Greenville on Feb. 20, 2021. The two teams were tied at halftime, but a dreadful third frame doomed the Shockers. Asia Strong scored a team-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go with seven rebounds. Carla Bremaud and Mariah McCully both chipped in nine points apiece. Three Pirates finished in double figures. Turnovers were the story for Wichita State. The Shockers committed 34 turnovers in the game - the most under head coach Keitha Adams. ECU recorded 17 steals and scored 27 points off those miscues. Wichita State shot nearly 50 percent from the field, but the amount of turnovers cost them the game.

HOT START
Wichita State opened the season winning seven of its first eight games (7-1), making it the best eight-game start in school history. Wichita State finished the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 9-4 record, marking the first time since 2014-15 the Shockers won nine out-of-league contests. It's only the third time in program history a Wichita State team has recorded nine non-conference wins.

WANTED FOR THEFT
Wichita State senior guard Mariah McCully has been pest on defense for opposing offenses through 17 games this season. McCully is riding a streak of 13 straight games with a steal and has swiped at least one in 16 of the first 17 games. She's had multiple in 12 of the 17. Her 38 steals easily lead the team and rank 67th nationally and fourth in the American Athletic Conference. Her 2.24 steals per game also rank fourth in the conference. During her first season at Wichita State (2019-20), McCully had a career-long 19-game streak with a steal, including a career-high seven at Tulane on Feb. 16, 2020.

The Shockers have outrebounded all but three teams and currently average 44.9 rebounds a game, which ranks seventh nationally. Their 763 total rebounds rank 24th in the NCAA. Wichita State ranks 10 in offensive rebounds per game and 29th in rebound margin. As it stands now, Wichita State's 44.9 rebounds per game would rank fourth-most in school history. Four different Shockers pull down at least 5.9 boards per game, led by Jane Asinde at 9.1.

DYNAMIC POINT GUARD
• Wichita State point guard Seraphine Bastin had her best season in a Shocker uniform in 2020-21. Bastin averaged 10.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.3 steals a game, while shooting 78.7 percent from the free throw line. The 5-foot-8 guard led the team in rebounding, assists, steals and double-doubles. In The American, Bastin ranked second in free throw percentage, third in assists, fourth in rebounding and fifth in assist-turnover ratio.

• She is off to another great start on the glass in 2021-22. Her 7.1 rebounds rank second on the team, and she's already had four games with 10 boards. In all but three games she's had five or more rebounds. Her season low is two.

• Bastin entered the Wichita State top 10 list for career assists on Nov. 26 vs. Alcorn State. She passed Allison Daniel who held the No. 10 spot with 308 career dimes. Bastin is already in the top 10 for career assists per game at 3.8. Her 3.8 helpers rank ninth best in school history.

• The Dinant, Belgium, native has a bulldog mentality and that is evident in her rebounding. Bastin led Wichita State and ranked sixth in the American Athletic Conference in rebounding at 7.7 per game and 131 total rebounds in 2020-21. Her 131 rebounds were 15 more than the next closest Shocker, which was Trajata Colbert with 116. Bastin has been one of the program's best rebounders since she arrived in 2018. She has 489 career rebounds, far and away the team's active leader. She has averaged 4.6 rebounds or more every season, including her career best 7.7 in 2020-21.

• With another season of eligibility remaining after the 2021-22 season, Bastin could find herself among the Shocker greats. She is on pace to finish her career with more than 1,000 points, 600 rebounds, 400 assists and 150 steals. Only one player in Wichita State history has accomplished that feat - Alex Harden. As it stands now, Bastin has 747 career points, 536 rebounds, 353 assists and 128 steals.
