TAMPA—The Wichita State track and field teams wrapped up competition at the 2021 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a pair of top-five team finishes in Tampa on Sunday.
Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Steve Rainbolt said both teams performed well.
"I told the team after the meet that this was a celebration of Wichita State Track and Field," Rainbolt said. "We were just short of our team goals on both the men's and the women's sides, but we actually did outperform our form chart on both sides and both teams had so many great performances. I was extremely proud of Shocker Track and Field this weekend."
The Shocker men finished as runners-up in the team race. They scored 198 point and were edged out by Houston who scored 221.50 points to win their fifth title in a row.
The Wichita State women were in a battle for third heading into the last event. Temple beat the Shockers in the women's 4X400-meter relay to grab third place. The Shocker women scored 79 points to take fourth in the team race.
The Shockers swept the Most Valuable Performer awards.
Rebekah Topham took home her fourth career AAC MVP award on the women's side and
Davis Dubbert won the men's MVP with strong finishes in the high jump (champion), javelin (all-conference) and decathlon (fourth).
The Shocker men kicked off the day with one of their best events of the weekend, the high jump. Dubbert took home gold, clearing a personal-best 2.14m/7-0.25. True freshman
Brady Palen got on the podium, clearing 2.11m/6-11 for second place.
Weston Lewis finished fourth for the Shockers as well.
Jed Helker continued his stellar 2021. He finished second in the 800 meters and third in the 1,500 meters to add two all-conference honors to his resume. He also earned all-conference honors in cross country in February.
Zack Penrod added a pair of all-conference awards as well. He won the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:52.14 and helped the Shockers' 4X400-meter relay team finish third.
Joakim Genereux,
Josh Cable and
Adam Gauzy also joined Penrod on the 4X400-meter relay team for all-conference honors.
Antonio Norman kept rolling in the 110-meter hurdles. He earned all-conference honors with a third-place finish. He matched his personal best of 13.81. Norman is in qualifying position for the West Regionals in two weeks.
On the women's side, Topham used her kick to chase down a second-place finish in the 5,000 meters. She crossed the line with a time of 16:39.77 and added an all-conference honor. Topham also took fourth in the 1,500 meters.
Destiny Masters impressed with a personal best in the women's high jump. She cleared 1.79m/5-10.50 to take second and earn all-conference honors. Her jump puts her in a tie for No. 3 in school history. She is also in qualifying position for Regionals.
Yazmine Wright finished in the top five of the 800 meters and 1,500 meters. She ran a time of 2:09.35 to finish fourth in the 800 meters and a time of 4:24.36 to take fifth in the 1,500 meters.
The conference meet marks the end for most of the Shockers' roster. Select athletes will move on to the West Regional to compete for a spot at the NCAA Championships.
The NCAA West Regionals are set for May 26-29 in College Station, Texas, on the campus of Texas A&M.
