Wichita State Claims 16 Individual Titles to Cap Off Opening Weekend

3/27/2021 4:51:00 PM

WICHITA—The Wichita State track and field teams concluded the opening weekend of the outdoor season with the second day of competition at the Shocker Spring Invitational inside of Cessna Stadium on Saturday.

Director of Track and Field Steve Rainbolt said the meet served as a good jumping off point for the outdoor season.

"I really liked this meet for our team as a season opener," Rainbolt said. "It's a great way to kick things off. Our athletes are walking out of this meet not beat up. When you go to a big meet like the Texas Relays, it's hard travel, a 10-hour drive. It's three days of tough competitions and sometimes you don't make a final. Sometimes you don't feel like you accomplished much.

"This was a great way to start the year off for our team."

All-in-all, the Shockers earned 16 event victories on the final day of the competition.

The men's team took home nine of those victories.

Joseph Holthusen carried over his momentum from his indoor season and won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.24.

Brady Palen made his outdoor debut as a Shocker. He cleared 2.05m/6-8.75 to win the high jump competition.

Zack Penrod returned to the track after a 1,500 meters' win on Friday night. He won the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.62.

Jaleel Montgomery and Joakim Genereux showed their strength as the freshmen sprinters won the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Montgomery won the 100 meters with a time of 10.66 and Genereux took the 200 meters' title with a time of 21.54.

In the long jump, Nate Vann set a new personal best by nearly 40 centimeters. He jumped 7.00m/22-11.75 for a massive personal best.

The women's squad took home seven more event victories on Saturday.

Jacque Darby was responsible for three wins. She won the long jump, 100 meters and 200 meters. Darby set a new personal best in the long jump with a mark of 5.96m/19-6.75.

Claudia Rojo was impressive in windy conditions over the hurdles Saturday. She won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.21 and was the runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.23.

Semaj McGhee won the triple jump with a mark of 11.69m/38-4.25. It was her outdoor debut as a Shocker.

Paula Garcia ran well in the 400 meters, finishing with a time of 57.33. She also competed in the triple jump, placing sixth.

Emily Gardiner was the runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 3.67m/12-0.50.

Rainbolt said it was nice to see good performances and other athletes getting back to competition.

"I'm thinking about Michael Bryan in the men's hammer throw where he set the school record yesterday," Rainbolt said. "I was excited to watch Taran Taylor and Kourtni Hubert because of what all of them have been through. The last time Taran Taylor had thrown was three years ago, and he's one of the best guys in the country."

The Shockers return to action with a handful of athletes heading to the Hayward Premiere on Friday and Saturday in Eugene, Oregon, at the newly renovated Hayward Field.
