Shocker Track and Field Concludes Opening Weekend at Triangular

1/16/2021 5:20:00 PM

MANHATTAN—The Shockers traveled to the campus of Kansas State to compete with the other two Division I track and field programs in the state of Kansas and came away with six individual event wins on Saturday in Ahearn Fieldhouse.

Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Steve Rainbolt said it felt good to be back on the track.

"I certainly did feel like there were some really solid performances for what basically amounted to a season opener," Rainbolt said. "It certainly does cause me to look forward with strong hopes for the rest of the season."

The Shocker men brought home five of the six individual event victories, including two podium sweeps. Had the team scores been split between men and women, the Wichita State men would've won the men's meet with 122 points.

"Winning the men's section of this meet was certainly a major highlight today without question," Rainbolt said. "That's the first time that we have ever won one of the sections of this meet and I'm really proud of our men's team for pulling off that victory."

Both podium sweeps came in the sprints as the Shockers went 1-2-3 in the 60 meters and the 200 meters.

Jaleel Montgomery won the 60 meters, crossing the line in 6.87 seconds. Montgomery's Shocker debut was good enough to slot him in a tie for seventh place in school history in the 60 meters. Tanner Brown finished second in the event (6.94) and fellow freshman Joakim Genereux came in third (6.95).

Genereux led a trio to the podium in the 200 meters. He won the event with a time of 22.33, while Joseph Holthusen was the runner-up in 23.08 and Montgomery came in third place with a time of 23.17.

Holthusen and Antonio Norman continued their strong starts from Thursday in the 60-meter hurdles. Holthusen won the event in 7.99 seconds, securing his second sub-8 second performance of the year. Norman was right behind him in second with a time of 8.00.

Brown went to a longer distance and continued his success. He won the 600-yards with a time of 1:13.56.

Adam Moore and Michael Bryan earned individual victories as well. Moore won the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:32.87, and Bryan took home his second-straight weight throw victory with a toss of 17.28m/56-8.50.

On the women's side, the Shockers took home just one individual event victory.

Winny Koskei won the 3,000 meters to help Wichita State sweep the 3,000 meters' titles. She won the event with a time of 10:01. 97.

Amanda Kakoulias earned her second top-three finish of the season in the women's shot put. She placed third with a throw of 13.90m/45-7.25.

Jocelen Ruth took third in the weight throw 15.71m/51-6.50. She improved upon her season-opening mark from Thursday by 37 centimeters.

Jacque Darby opened her season with a jump of 5.55m/18-2.50 in the women's long jump. She earned third place with that mark.

Freshman jumper Faith Turner took third in the triple jump. She jumped 11.52m/37-9.50 as Wichita State's best finisher in the event.

As a team, Wichita State came in third place with 197.5 team points.

The Shockers' next track meet is scheduled for Jan. 29 with the Shocker Invitational. Wichita State is also slated to compete at a meet at Kansas State on Jan. 29-30.

Before the track and field team returns to action, the cross country team is slated to host and compete in the JK Gold Classic on at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
