Shockers Head to the Queen City to Face the 49ers

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State men's tennis team is looking to continue their momentum against the Charlotte 49ers in the Queen City at noon on Thursday at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
 
Opening Serve
  • This will be the fourth of 11 consecutive road matches for the Shockers.
  • On this road trip WSU will travel to five different states over the next month before they play their next home match on February 21, against UT Arlington.
  • This will only be the second ever meeting between these two programs, with the first meeting coming last season with the Shockers coming out with a 4-3 victory at Wichita Collegiate School on March 17.
  • The Shockers are coming off a dominating 4-1 victory over former Missouri Valley Conference foe Drake.
 
History in Fayetteville
  • Wichita State made history at the Razorback Invite last weekend when Elio Lago sealed a 4-3 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks. This was only the third time since 1987 that WSU has defeated an SEC school.
  • The last Shocker victory over an SEC team was in 2016 when they defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks 4-2, at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Columbus, Ohio.
 
Seniors Stay Hot
  • Marius Frosa and Elio Lago have been killing it in singles to begin the season combining for a 6-1 record. Frosa has gone 1-0 at four and 2-0 at five, while Lago has gone 2-1 at three and 1-0 at four.
 
Freshman Firsts
  • Benjamin Niv has made an immediate impact in doubles in his first semester as a Shocker going 2-0 with Stefan Latinovic and 1-0 with Alex Richards.
  • Alex Richards and Yi Jui Lo have also found early success on the courts as a doubles pairing securing their first collegiate doubles win against the Omaha Mavericks.
  • Richards also picked up his first collegiate singles win against Alvaro Quintana of Omaha, 6-1, 6-0, while Lo found hist first collegiate singles win over David Nyman of Drake, 6-1, 7-5.

  • The 49ers are under the leadership of first year head coach Kyle Bailey who spent his last three seasons as associate head coach at the University of South Carolina.
  • Sophomore Henry Lieberman earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors last week after he started his season 3-0 in singles. He secured his first career victory over a player ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Top 40 with a three-set win over South Carolina's Raphael Lambling who was ranked No. 39.
