Foster Releases 2019-20 Schedule

8/16/2019 11:13:00 AM

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State women's tennis head coach Colin Foster announced his team's 2019-20 schedule on Tuesday afternoon.

WSU missed the postseason last year but looks to return this season after making the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship the past 10 years.

The team is led by a group of six seniors and they will face 14 opponents that finished in the ITA/Oracle Team Rankings. Of the 14 teams, seven made the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships with another three making it to the Super Regionals.

"We are very excited about this season's schedule. Our fall schedule is balanced with a good mix of competition. Some of the events will allow us to collect some wins and build confidence while the others will be more competitive and test us," Foster said.

The Shockers are set to play in four fall tournaments. WSU kicks off the season by competing at the Drake Invitational from September 13-15. They head to Oklahoma twice in October and once again in November to take part in the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa (Oct. 5-13),  the ITA Central Regional Championships in Norman (Oct. 17-22), and the Tulsa Invitational (Nov. 1-3).

"Our spring season once again features many of the regional and conference powers," Foster said. "We've got home matches with Power 6 schools Kansas State and Arkansas and welcome six AAC opponents to Wichita."

Wichita State's schedule features 11 matches that will be played at home. The highlight is on March 27 against one of last year's Super Regional teams, Central Florida. The Knights went 24-4 and finished No. 19 in the ITA/Oracle Team Rankings after running to the Super Regional before losing to Pepperdine, 4-2. The Shockers will look to avenge last year's 4-0 loss in Orlando, Fla.

The Shockers will also see both Kansas State and Arkansas roll into town on Jan. 31 and Feb. 2. The Wildcats won last season's bout in Manhattan, 7-0, breaking a four-match win streak held by the Shockers. The Shockers look to beat the Razorbacks for a second straight season after winning 4-1 last year.

WSU's road schedule features 15 opponents, eight of which finished the season ranked. Two early road matchups feature Super Regional teams from last season, Oklahoma State and Kansas. OSU finished ranked No. 12 and went 21-8, losing in the Super Regionals to North Carolina. The Cowgirls are the first opponent the Shockers will face in their dual schedule on Jan. 11. KU finished No. 12 in the rankings and had a record of 27-5. They fell 4-3 in the Super Regionals to eventual national champion Stanford. The Shockers head to Lawrence on Jan. 19 to take on the Jayhawks.
