WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State women's tennis doubles pair
Marta Bellucco and
Fatima Bizhukova begin action at the NCAA Doubles Championships on Tuesday, May 21 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
The Shocker duo opens play Tuesday against No. 31-ranked Sofia Blanco and Catherine Gulihur of Oklahoma State with a time yet to be determined. Bellucco and Bizhukova, who rank No. 30 in the latest ITA/Oracle Doubles Rankings, finished the season 11-10 overall with five ranked wins.
Blanco and Gulihur compiled a 12-4 record in the regular season in the No. 1 slot for the Cowgirls. The two pairs met up on March 10 in Wichita, where Bellucco and Bizhukova held a 5-3 lead before play was suspended.
Bizhukova and Bellucco become the fourth duo to compete at the NCAA Doubles Championships, and the first since Stephanie Dalmacio and Delia Damaschin in 2010. Sandy Sadler and Jill Braendle competed in 1984 and 1985 and JoEllen Walker and Lisa Field in 1995. Sadler and Braendle reached the round of 16 in 1985, losing to eventual National Champion Stanford.
