McMillian Wins 200m, Koskei Runs Third Fastest 5000m

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Taniyah McMillian recorded the second fastest indoor 200m time in Wichita State history winning the event with a time of 24.40 at the Fourth Annual Gorilla Classic.
 
Taniyah McMillian, a redshirt freshman from Oklahoma City, won section 11 of the women's 200m with a personal best time of 24.40. In 15 sections with 84 total runners, McMillian's time was fast enough to win the event.
 
McMillian's time of 24.40 is the second fastest 200m in Shocker history, passing Taylor Larch-Miller's 2017 time of 24.46. She was the only Shocker to win an individual event on day one of the Fourth Annual Gorilla Classic.
 
Her first place finish was one of eight top-5 finishes for the Shockers, including second place finishes by both the men's and women's distance medley relay teams.
 
The women's distance medley relay team of Yazmine Wright, Leah Reichenberger, Tianna Holmes and Halle Johnson finished second with a time of 12:00.18, currently the third fastest time in the American Athletic Conference.
 
Not to be out done, the men's distance medley relay group of Reno Law, Adam Gauzy, Connor Stine and Ben Flowers followed the women's success with a second place finish of their own with a time of 9:59.98. The group's time sits No. 2 in The American.
 
Claudia Rojo cleared 1.64m/5-4.5 to place second in the open high jump.
 
Other top-5 finishers include, third place finishers Alyssa Wheeler (open pole vault | 3.64m/11-11.25) and Chandler Stiawalt (open high jump | 1.93m/6-4). Fourth place finisher Kole Konrade (open high jump | 1.93m/6-4) and fifth place finisher Kaden Griffin (long jump | 7.34m/24-1).
 
Day two of the Fourth Annual Gorilla Classic continues Saturday, Feb. 9 at 10:00 a.m.
 

SEATTLE, Wash. – Winny Koskei highlighted the day for the Shockers at the Husky Classic, hosted by University of Washington. The redshirt sophomore recorded the third fastest 5000m in Shocker history with a time of 16:05.55, improving her conference leading time by nearly 12 seconds.
 
Shockers Rebekah Topham and Zack Penrod were also in action. In a field of 71 runners, Topham finished 26th in the 3000m with a time of 9:21.75. She bettered her No. 4 Shocker all-time top-10 mark by five seconds.
 
Penrod placed 18th in the men's mile with a time of 4:04.66, 48 men entered the race.
 

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Wichita State sent six athletes to compete at the Tyson Invitational, including five throwers and one jumper. Rayvon Allen and Alex Adams highlighted with fifth place finishes in their respective events.
Allen recorded an indoor personal best mark of 7.59m/24-11 to finish fifth in the long jump, the St. Louis native improved his No. 7 Shocker all-time top-10 mark by an inch and three quarters.
 
In a highly competitive weight throw competition, Adams placed fifth with a mark of 17.71m/58-1.25.
 
Other competitors on day one of the Tyson Invitational include weight throwers Amanda Kakoulias (13.75m/45-1.5), Isaiah Evans (18.53m/60-9.5) and Cory Martens (18.20m/59-8.5).
 
Kelsey Slawson, Adams and Kakoulias will compete in the women's shot put on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., while Martens enters the men's shot put at 3:00 p.m.
