Shocker Track and Field Opens Season Wednesday

12/3/2019 3:05:00 PM

WICHITA—The Wichita State track and field teams kick off their seasons this week with appearances at three different meets, including playing host to the Shocker Multis and the Intrasquad Meet.

Live updates for the whole weekend can be found on Twitter @GoShockersTFXC. Recaps and results will also be posted on GoShockers.com.

SHOCKER MULTIS
The inaugural meet of the 2020 indoor track season is the Shocker Multis, which start Wednesday and conclude Thursday.

A field of 14 men will participate in a heptathlon while a group of eight women compete in a pentathlon. Athletes from Wichita State, Friends University and Oklahoma Baptist are all in the entries, which can be found here.

Notable entries for the Shockers include Kendra Henry and Claudia Rojo Cazorla. Henry and Rojo were the top two finishers at the 2019 American Conference Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon. On the men's side, Grant Downes leads the way for the Shockers. He finished seventh in the decathlon at the 2019 conference meet, and comes in with a personal best of 4,802 points.

Competition on both days kicks off at 2 p.m. at the Heskett Center. Admission is free for fans. A full schedule of competition can be foundhere.

INTRASQUAD MEET
The whole team gets involved Friday with the 13th annual Intrasquad Meet.

The entire Wichita State track and field teams are split into three teams (Yellow, Black and White) and alumni also are represented (Gray). Newcomers are drafted every year and stay with that team until they graduate. This year's first pick went to the Black team and they drafted Antonio Norman.

The Yellow squad has dominated the event since its inception. It has won nine times including each of the past five years. White has won twice and Black has won just once.

Scoring will be five places for individual events (6-4-3-2-1) and four places for relays (6-4-3-2).

The meet kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with field events at the Heskett Center. Admission is free and a full schedule can be found here.

SHARON COLYEAR-DANVILLE SEASON OPENER
Winny Koskei and Rebekah Topham head up to Boston for their season opening 5,000-meter races.

This meet traditionally has faster times, so Koskei and Topham are hoping to qualify for the NCAA Championships early in the year.

Koskei was just named American Athletic Conference Runner of the Year for he efforts in the 2019 cross country season. Koskei repeated as conference champion and went back to the NCAA Cross Country Championships where she finished 47th overall.

Topham has momentum on her side as she was an All-American at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase where she finished eighth overall. Topham also had a good cross country season, consistently finishing second for the Shockers, including a runer-up finish at the conference meet.

The women's sections of the 5K start at 3:40 p.m. on Saturday.
