Two Former Shockers Named to USA Premier12 Roster

10/10/2019 10:11:00 AM

DURHAM, N.C. – USA Baseball unveiled its roster for the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Premier12™ Thursday, Oct. 10, and former Wichita State baseball standouts Alec Bohm and Brian Flynn are among the 28 players to be selected to the roster.

The tournament is the first opportunity for Team USA to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The top finisher from both the Americas territory and Asia/Oceania territory (excluding Japan) will join host-country Japan and WBSC Baseball Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifier champion Israel in the six-team Olympic tournament. The final two Olympic berths will be decided in March 2020.

Bohm, who was an All-American third baseman for the Shockers from 2016-18 and hails from Omaha, Neb., hit .269 with 64 hits, 11 doubles, one triple, 14 homers, 42 RBI and 28 walks in 63 games for the Reading Fightin Phils in 2019. The Fightin Phils are the Double-A affiliate for the Philadelphia Phillies, who drafted Bohm third overall in the 2018 MLB Draft. His 14 home runs for Reading ranked second on the team.

Flynn, who pitched for Wichita State from 2009-11, has been with the Kansas City Royals organization since 2014. In 2019, he made 11 appearances and one start for Kansas City, tallying 29 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings. A native of Owasso, Okla., Flynn was drafted in the seventh round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers.

The U.S. will begin the WBSC Premier12™ in Guadalajara, Mexico, from November 2-4 as a member of Group A with the Dominican Republic, Mexico and the Netherlands. The top two nations from Group A will advance to the Super Round in Tokyo from November 11-16.

The roster is made up of 15 pitchers and 13 position players currently not on an MLB 40-man roster.

Four-time World Series Champion Joe Girardi was named the manager of the team in August.

The team will train in Surprise, Arizona, from October 21-28 at the Kansas City Royals Spring Training facility before traveling to Mexico for the opening round of the Premier12™.
