Shockers Fall Short in Series Finale

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- UTSA completed the three-game sweep over Wichita State with a 6-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

The Shockers (26-23, 10-11) were swept in a conference series for the first time this season, while UTSA (33-14, 15-6) completed their first conference sweep of 2026.

Wichita State out-hit the Roadrunners, 7-5, and out-homered UTSA, 2-0, but handed out seven walks and hit three batters to aid the Roadrunners attack. The game featured nine single-run half innings and no multi-run frames.

UTSA built an early cushion, grabbing the game's first run on a Jordan Ballin RBI groundout in the second and doubling the lead in the third on a wild pitch from WSU starter Johnny Nuanez (4-2).

Jack Quick cut the lead in half with a booming solo homer in the top of the fifth, but the Roadrunners got the run right back in the bottom of the inning when Lane Haworth lifted a sacrifice fly. Another run-scoring wild pitch in the sixth extended the advantage to 4-1.

Owen Washburn hammered WSU's second solo homer in the top of the seventh to pull the Shockers within 4-2, then Wichita State had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the eighth. Alex Ulloa led off the inning with a bunt single and Jayson Jones followed with a pinch-hit single to put runners at the corners with nobody out. UTSA reliever Sam Simmons got Zeb Henry to bounce into a 4-6-3 double play, scoring a run but wiping the bases clean. UTSA then tacked on two runs in the eighth, the big blow coming on a Drew Detlefsen two-out RBI double.

Simmons pitched around a one-out single in the ninth to earn his fifth save.

Jake Qualia (3-1) picked up the win for the Roadrunners with 6.2 strong innings, allowing just three hits and two runs. Nuanez pitched well in defeat, striking out six over 5.0 innings while conceding four hits and three runs.

The Shockers are back in action on Friday against Florida Atlantic. First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for 6:05 pm CT.
