SCENE SETTER: With the final midweek game of the season now in the rearview mirror, Wichita State turns its attention to the final three weekends of American Conference play beginning with a three-game series in San Antonio against defending regular season champion UTSA. The Shockers are coming off a 14-1 loss on Tuesday night against #11 Kansas, a game called after eight innings by the 10-run rule. By taking two of three games against Rice this past weekend, WSU maintained sole possession of a pivotal top four spot in the American Conference standings. Under the new conference tournament format, the top two seeds receive a double bye and seeds three and four receive a single bye.
SHOCKER BASEBALL ON THE RADIO AND ESPN PLUS: KFH 97.5 FM/1240 AM will once again serve as the radio home for Wichita State baseball broadcasts in 2026. The Voice of the Shockers Mike Kennedy will handle play-by-play duties for the series against the Roadrunners, with Denning Gerig joining the broadcast as color commentator. Live audio, in addition to live statistics, is available at GoShockers.com.Â
SERIES HISTORY: The Shockers and Roadrunners have a limited history, with a three-game series each of the last two seasons representing the entirety of their all-time meetings. Wichita State won two of three games in San Antonio in 2024, dropping the opener 6-5 before sweeping a doubleheader, 11-2 and 8-4. UTSA then swept the Shockers in Wichita last season, taking all three games by scores of 9-2, 16-8 and 5-1.
SCOUTING UTSA: The Roadrunners are chasing a second consecutive American Conference regular season title, currently tied atop the standings with a 12-6 conference mark as part of a 30-14 overall record. UTSA is coming off a wild 22-10 win over Incarnate Word on Tuesday, a game in which they trailed 8-2 but won in run-rule fashion thanks to a 14-run fifth inning. Last season, UTSA claimed their first regional championship, winning the Austin Regional with a pair of victories against Texas. The Roadrunners finished last season 25-2 at home and are 16-5 at Roadrunner Field in 2026. Head coach Patrick Hallmark is in his seventh season at the helm of the Roadrunners with a 217-125 mark in San Antonio. As a player, he spent three seasons with the Wichita Wranglers (1999, 2000, 2002) while in the Kansas City Royals minor league system.
MIDWEEKS WON'T BE MISSED: Wichita State closed out the midweek portion of their schedule on Tuesday night, dropping a 14-1 decision to Kansas in a game called after eight innings by the 10-run rule. The Shockers went 0-7 in midweek games against D1 opponents, getting outscored 68-20. Wichita State had a lead in just one of those games, grabbing a 1-0 and 3-1 edge at Kansas State on March 10.
KING HENRY: Wichita State welcomed back Zeb Henry into the starting lineup against Rice after missing 26 games due to injury. The Shockers opening day second base announced his return with a 5-for-10 series, highlighted by a career-best three hits on Sunday. Henry added another hit on Tuesday against Kansas, making him 6-for-13 since returning to action on April 18.
ERROR MESSAGE: Wichita State's .962 team fielding percentage is the lowest in the American Conference and the Shockers struggled defensively in the month of April. WSU has committed 22 errors over the last 12 games, with only two errorless contests (April 19 at East Carolina, April 25 vs. Rice) during the stretch. WSU made four errors on Tuesday vs. Kansas.
IN THE ZONE: Shocker pitchers combined to issue just five walks in the three-game series against Rice, matching WSU's lowest total in any three-game stretch this season (first three games of the West Georgia series, 3/6 and 3/7 doubleheader). The bullpen nearly avoided free passes entirely, handing out one total walk in 11.1 combined innings of work. Wichita State hurlers struggled to throw strikes on Tuesday, however, matching a season high with nine walks against Kansas.
REVERSAL OF FORTUNE: After mustering just one extra-base hit over the five games leading into the Rice series, Wichita State's offense finally broke out against the Owls. The Shockers combined for 12 extra-base hits in the three games (six doubles, six home runs). It is the most extra-base hits WSU has produced in any conference series this season.
TWO-OUT MAGIC: The Shockers have done much of their damage offensively this season with two outs. WSU has produced a staggering 120 two-out RBI, 35Â more than their opponents. Alex Ulloa and Owen Washburn are the top two-out producers, with 20 and 19 RBI in those situations, respectively. The Shockers racked up a season-high 10 of those two-out RBI on 4/19 at East Carolina.
HANG THE BUNTING: Wichita State catcher Ethan Gonzalez set a new single-game program record with three sacrifice bunts on 4/19 in the win over East Carolina. The junior laid down a sacrifice bunt in five consecutive games and now leads the American Conference with nine sacrifices on the season. The individual program record is 11, set by Andrew Stewart in 2022. Wichita State's 35 team sacrifice bunts are already tied for fifth-most in program history.
