AUSTIN, Texas – Senior All-American
Hunter Veith bettered his school record winning the decathlon at the Texas Relays with 8,046 points.
The Cheney, Kan., native became the first Shocker decathlete to break the 8,000 point barrier.
Veith entered day two of the multi with 4,398 points, 112 points ahead of second place. He would end up winning the decathlon by a slim margin of 100 points.
He started day two finishing fourth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.77. In the discus he finished ninth (37.47m/122-11), the first event he finished outside of the top five. Veith placed second in the pole vault clearing 4.90m/16-0.75 to lead the decathlon with 6,769 points after eight events.
In the javelin he placed fourth with a throw of 55.76m/182-11 and after nine events he had 7,443 points. Going into the final event he needed to finish the 1500 under five minutes to reach the 8,000 point barrier and he did just that placing eighth with a time of 4:52.63 to win the decathlon with 8,046 points.

Junior
Ben Johnson finished the decathlon in 11th place with 6,946 points. He placed 10th in the 110m hurdles (14.97), fifth in the discus with a personal best 41.95m/137-7, 11th in the pole vault (4.40m/14-5.25), 12th in the javelin (40.49m/132-10) and fifth in the 1500m with a time of 4:43.93.
The men's javelin group was led by true freshman
Taran Taylor who placed third in Section B of the event with a throw of 60.44m/198-3, followed by senior All-American
Damien Odle in fourth (63.97m/209-10) and senior
John Hoplin in eighth (60.44m/198-3).
Hayden Bugner placed ninth in pit 2 of the pole vault clearing 5.00m/16-4.75.
In the men's 400m hurldes,
Isaac Poe led the Shockers finishing 25th overall with a time of 52.35. He placed fourth in heat nine. Austin Corely ran 52.48 finishing seventh in heat four which was 29th overall.
Kelsey Tenbrink was the lone female Shocker placing 10th (38.77m/127-2) in Section B of the women's javelin.
Day three of the Texas Relays continues tomorrow beginning with the men's 4x400m relay at 9:35 a.m. Distance runners
Gage Garcia and
Pedro Montoya travel to the west coast to compete in the San Francisco Distance Carnival, while
Zack Penrod runs at the Stanford Invitational.
