Veith Leads Decathlon After Day One

AUSTIN, Texas –
Four-Time All-American Hunter Veith leads the decathlon after day one at the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.

The Cheney, Kan., native set two personal best and equaled a personal best en route to a first day leading score of 4,398, 112 points ahead of second place multi-athlete Scott Filip of Rice University.

Veith began the day finishing second in the 100m with a time of 10.72 scoring 924 points. The senior won the second event of the day equaling his personal best mark of 7.78m/25-6.25 scoring 1,005 points and taking an overall lead with 1,929 points. Shot put the third event of the day, Veith finished fifth with a mark of 13.47m but still remained the leader with 2,625 points.

His second victory of the day came in the high jump clearing a personal best 2.10m/6-10.75, two heights higher than any other competitor. Veith finished strong with a personal best in the final event of day one placing fourth in the 400m with a personal best time of 48.66.

Ben Johnson finished day one with a total of 3,553 points and is currently in 15th place. The junior finished the 100m in 11.29, long jump with a mark of 6.48m/21-3.25, shot put with a throw of 12.77m/41-10.75, high jump clearing 1.92m/6-3.5 and the 400m in 53.06.

Day two of the decathlon continues tomorrow morning with the 110m hurdles at 10 a.m. CT, other athletes making their 2018 Texas Relays debut include Damien Odle, John Hoplin, Taran Taylor, Hayden Bugner, Isaac Poe, Austin Corley, Nathan Wickoren and Kelsey Tenbrink.
