WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State softball team continues its fall schedule this weekend when they play host to Cowley College on Friday evening and Washburn University on Sunday afternoon, both at Wilkins Stadium.
The Shockers host the Tigers on Friday with a 5 p.m. first pitch. The Tigers finished the 2017 season 46-17 overall after winning a Jayhawk East title, Region VI District E Championship and finishing fifth at the NJCAA Division II national tournament. Head coach Jenny Hoyt, who has led the Tigers to 111 wins in three seasons, was also named the Jayhawk East Coach of the Year during the 2017 season.
Last season Wichita State scored five runs in the first three innings, eventually winning 10-6 over Cowley with
Madison Perrigan,
Morgan Palmer and
Mauriana Jamele all scoring runs.
Perrigan leads the Shockers in total bases this fall season [13] and hits [8] while
Kiersten Otte leads the offense with a batting average of .667.
Laurie Derrico has scored seven runs and has seven hits through four games.
Bailey Lange leads the pitchers with four strikeouts.
On Sunday, the Shockers host NCAA Division II Washburn University for a 10-inning matchup [1 p.m. first pitch] in what is a first matchup between the two sides. In 2017 the Ichabods finished 25-30 with a 12-14 record in the MIAA, failing to reach the conference tournament slate.
Admission to both games is $5 at the gate with no advanced purchase available. Wichita State students will receive free admission with valid WSU ID.
