WICHITA, Kan.  --  Four former or current Shockers will compete beginning Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Ore., for the opportunity to make the Team USA roster for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

"I am excited about all of these athletes being able to compete in the United State Olympic Trials," said Steve Rainbolt, Director of Track and Field. "It is a special, special thing."

Current Shocker All-American Damien Odle's javelin throw of 73.36m/240-8 at the Shocker Open on May 6 was good enough to qualify him as one of the top 24 at the trials.

"I am very excited for Damien Odle," Rainbolt said. "He finished his collegiate season so strong at the NCAA Championship, and it is going to really fun to watch him at the trials."

Former Shocker All-American Austin Bahner, a Wichita native and volunteer coach on the Shocker Track and Field staff, will compete against a field of 18 in the Decathlon on Friday and Saturday. He competes for the Shocker Track Club and has the 15th-best point total in the field with 7,765 points.

"It is fun for me to have worked with Austin Bahner for seven years now," Rainbolt said. "He has been to three championships representing the United States. He's competed in the Thorpe Cup a couple of times and last summer in the Pan American games, and done well."

In addition, two of Wichita State's best former female distance runners and All-Americans, Kellyn Taylor (Johnson) and Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton will join a field of 24, 10,000 meter runners at 1 p.m., Central, on Saturday. Taylor will also run in the 5,000 meters at 6:20 p.m., Central, Thurs., July 7.

"It is really special for the women from our program, Kellyn and Aliphine," Rainbolt said. "To be battling for a spot on the Olympic Team. I am really excited for that race. They are great athletes and great women. They were immensely important to our team, and led out teams to MVC Championships. It is super-exciting to be watching these women compete at the trials."

Taylor, who has the fourth-fastest 10,000 meter time of the competitors at 31:40.70, earned All-American honors at WSU with a third-place finish in the mile at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championship. In previous Olympic Trials action, she was 10th in the 10,000 meters and 14th in the 5,000 meters in 2012. Taylor, who hails from Sussex, Wis., runs for Northern Arizona Elite/HOKAONEONE.

Tuliamuk-Bolton, who is the most decorated female athlete at Wichita State with 13 NCAA All-American performances and five school records, has the ninth-fastest time in the field at 31:54.20.
