PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Gabriela Porubin and
Giulia Guidetti have began play in the qualifying tournaments at the 2016 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
Porubin - No. 74 in ITA singles rankings - lost her opening round matchup to Nuria Ormeno Ruiz (Colorado) - No. 110 in ITA singles rankings - as Ruiz won 6-1, 6-4. In the consolation bracket, Denise Starr (California) defeated Porubin by scores of 6-4, 6-1 to eliminate Porubin from singles play.
Giulia Guidetti got into the consolation bracket after a player withdrew. Guidetti beat No. 36 Bea Machado Sanchez (Missouri) 7-5, 6-3. Guidetti will take on No. 58 Wendy Zhang (Rice) tomorrow.
In doubles play, Porubin and Guidetti lost to the No. 37 ranked doubles team of Spencer Liang and Anna Danilina (Florida) by a score of 8-3. They will take on Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko from Wake Forest, who are ranked No. 22 in the ITA doubles rankings.
UPDATE Oct. 5: Guerin and Ulyashchenko (Wake Forest) defeated Guidetti and Porubin 8-5 in the consolation bracket, eliminating them from doubles play.
