Pre-Qualifying Singles Bracket
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Giulia Guidetti won two matches in the pre-qualifying tournament at the 2016 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, becoming the second singles player in program history to pick up multiple wins in the event.
On Saturday, Guidetti defeated Dani Wagland (Texas) 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the round of 32. Wagland is No. 113 in the ITA singles rankings. Later in the afternoon, Guidetti topped Alexa Graham (North Carolina) 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 to advance for the opportunity to play for a qualifying spot in the Championships. Graham was the No. 12 seed out of the 64 competitiors.
On Sunday, Madison Westby (USC) defeated Guidetti 6-3, 7-6 (5) to qualify for the Championships. Westby is currently ranked No. 88 in the ITA singles rankings, and was also the fifth seed in the bracket.
Lutfiana Budiharto is the only other women's tennis player to win multiple matches at the Championships. In 2009, Budiharto went 3-0 in the pre-qualifying bracket before losing in the first round of the qualifying tournament.
"Giulia played three very high level matches," said women's head coach
Colin Foster. "She got wins against a nationally ranked opponent and a blue-chip freshman. She came up just short today against a former Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, but this event continues to show that she belongs in the upper echelon of college tennis, and she has more than earned that label."
Guidetti and the rest of the Shockers will head to Evansville, Ind. on Oct. 8-10 for the MVC Individual Championships.
