EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The top-seeded Wichita State women's tennis team brushed aside Illinois State, 4-0, in Friday quarterfinal action at the Missouri Valley Conference Team Championships.
WSU (22-3 and ranked 33rd nationally) swept the doubles and added wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 6 singles to clinch the sweep.
For the ninth-straight year, ISU (2-19) suffered a season-ending, MVC Tournament loss to the Shockers.
WSU advances to Saturday's semifinal round to take on fourth-seeded Southern Illinois (16-9), a 4-2 winner over host Evansville. First serve is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
The Shockers rested top singles player Julia Schiller and No. 5 Lucia Kovalova but hardly missed a beat, with fill-ins Luca Pump and Guilia Guidetti both playing well. Pump won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot, and Guidetti was two games away from her own sweep when the dual was officially clinched.
Gabriela Porubin (No. 1), Rebecca Pedrazzi (No. 2) and Abby Stevens all played up a spot, and Aleks Trifunofic moved from No. 6 to 4.
Pedrazzi posted a 6-0, 6-1 win, and Steven's 6-2, 6-2 victory gave the Shockers their fourth point to bring the dual to a close.
The Shockers held commanding leads in the three unfinished matches.
Porubin was a game away from a win at No. 1 singles, leading 6-3, 5-2. Trifunovic held a commanding 6-3, 4-2 lead at the No. 4 position, in addition to Guidetti's 6-1, 4-1 start.
