DALLAS -- The Wichita State women's tennis team captured 17 of 19 matches on Saturday and Sunday over Sam Houston State and host SMU to close out its weekend at the Red & Blue Challenge.
The Shockers swept six singles (all in straight sets) and three doubles matches from SHSU on Saturday, then closed out their fall season by taking five of six singles pairings and two of the three doubles matches from SMU on Sunday afternoon.
WSU bested all three of its hidden dual opponents over the three days (the Shockers took five of nine singles and doubles matches on Friday against national power Texas A&M) to claim the unofficial tournament title.
"We've played an awful lot of tennis over the last two or three months and put lot of work in," WSU head coach,
Colin Foster said. "To be rewarded in the won-loss column this weekend made for a nice end to the semester,"
Gabriela Porubin (ITA No. 125) and
Giulia Guidetti each went 3-0 in tournament play. Porubin improved her fall singles record to 11-5 and Guidetti moved to 15-4.
The doubles team of
Julia Schiller and
Gabriela Porubin (9-4) followed up Friday's big win over 14th-ranked Texas A&M with a 7-5 win over SMU's Sharapova and Perez to finish the weekend at 2-0.
The Shockers' next action comes Jan. 15 when they open up their spring dual schedule at Missouri Valley Conference foe Missouri State. The Shockers' first scheduled home match is Jan. 18 against Arkansas.
