TF: Shockers Begin Indoor Season on Strong Note

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Wichita State track and field teams began the 2015 indoor season on a strong note during competition on Friday at the Bill Easton Classic inside the Anschutz Pavilion in Lawrence.

On the men's side, the Shockers had 20 top-five finishes, including three top-five finishes in their relay races. The Shocker men had several individual winners: Tate Annis (long jump, Skylar Arneson (weight throw), Shazz-Michael Lindo (triple jump), Brady Johnson (mile run) and Robbie Martinez-Garcia (1000-meter run).

WSU's women kicked off their indoor season with 26 top-five finishes and three top-five finishes in their relay races, including winning the distance medley race. Individually, Shanice Andrews won the triple jump and Nikki Larch-Miller took home the 60-meter hurdles crown.

Field Events

Women

Weight Throw

Emily Cook took fifth in the women's weight throw with a throw of 51'-11”, and Sadie Suenram was seventh when she threw the weight throw 48'-4.5”

Pole Vault

Taylor Swanson finished second in the pole vault when she vaulted 12'-11.5”. Alesa Frey finished eighth when she vaulted 11'-5.75”, and McKenzee Kroeschell was 12th after vaulting 10'-11.75.” Amanda Gardner was 14th when she vaulted 10'-6”.

Long Jump

Jenny Pinkston was third with a jump of 18'-9.25”, the longest jump of any Shocker on the day. Borman was fifth with a jump of 18'-2.25 and Marli Bartlett was 11th when she jumped 16'-10.5”.

Emily Doffing was 12th (16'-8”), Jamie Lovett (16'-5.25”) finished 13th, Addy Moser was 17th (15'-11.75), Ximena Cazenave was 19th (15'-11”) and Megan Holmes was 20th (15'-10.25”). Courtney Lies placed in 21st (15'-9”), Bailey Bahner finished 23rd (15'-1.50), and Ninaa Edwards was 25th (14'-9.25”).

Shot Put

Emily Cook was the highest Shocker finisher in the shot put when she placed fourth with a throw of 43'-4.50”. Sadie Suenram was ninth when throwing the shot put a distance of 41'-6”.

Triple Jump

The Shockers had four of the top five finishes in the triple jump. Shanice Andrews earned the victory in the triple jump when she won with a jump of 38'-6”. Courtney Lies was third (35'-6”), Meghan Holmes finished fourth (35'-5.25”) and Addy Moser (34-4.75) was fifth.

High Jump

Jaclyn Weber (5'-3”), Nikki Larch-Miller (5'-3”) and Macy Ebert (5'-3”) finished in ninth-11th place respectively in the women's high jump, and Ashley Petersen (4'-11”) and Haley Griffin (4'-11”) placed 14th and 15th respectively as well. Stephanie Knab (4'-9”) was also 17th in the women's high jump.

Men

Long Jump

Wichita State had seven out of the top-10 finishes in the men's long jump, including the top four finishes. Tate Annis won the long jump when he jumped 23'-4.50”. Grant Ralston (22'-1”) was second, Ben Shaw (21'-11”) was third, Shazz-Michael Lindo was fourth (21'-10.75”) and Marcus Moeder (21'-6.75”) placed seventh.

Taylor Cross finished eighth when he jumped 21'-6”, Tyler Gillen was ninth at 20'-10.75”, and John Nichols placed 13th while jumping 19'-9.5”. Seth Buck was 14th when he jumped a distance of 19'-4.5”. Ben Jonson was unattached and placed 15th (19'-3.5”).

Weight Throw

The Shockers placed finishers in each of the top three spots in the men's weight throw. Skylar Arneson won with a throw of 62'-9.5, Taylor Goldsmith was second after throwing a distance of 61'-9.75 and Weston Cottrell was third when he threw 57'-2.75”.

High Jump

Garret Lynch finished fourth in the high jump when he jumped 6'-8.75”. Zach Buddah was 11th when he jumped 6'-2.75, and Drew Johnson was 15th as he jumped 5'-8.75.” Austin Chippeaux, who jumped unattached, finished ninth with a jump of 6'-4.75”.

Pole Vault

Ethan Pearson led the way for Wichita State when he placed eighth with a vault of 16'-.75”. Chris Peters was right behind Pearson in ninth as he vaulted 15'-7,” and Alex Green (unattached) was 16th with a vault of 14'-1.25”.

Triple Jump

Shazz-Michael Lindo and Ben Shaw took two of the top three positions in the men's triple jump, with Lindo winning the triple jump with a jump of 48'. Shaw jumped 42'-11”, which was good for a third place finish.

Shot Put

Zach Loesch finished in second during the men's shot put when he threw a distance of 53'-2.25 and Arneson was third when he threw his shot put a distance of 52'-5.50”. Kord Ferguson, who threw unattached, won the event when he threw 54'-3.25.

Running Events

Women

3000-meter run

Lycia Hollon finished third in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:18.43. Right behind her in fourth was Kayla Deighan who raced to a time of 10:21.58. Emily Hornbeck placed 10th by running a time of 10:51.33, and Jordan Maestes, who ran unattached, was 11th with a time or 10:57.76.

60-meter hurdles

The Shockers dominated the 60-meter hurdles, with having six out of eight competitors who placed in the final. Sisters Nikki Larch-Miller (8.50) and Taylor Larch-Miller (8.63) were the top two finishers along with Breanne Borman (8.85) finishing fourth.

Shanice Andrews finished fifth at 8.87, Taylor Thomas was sixth with a time of nine seconds, and Jenny Pinkston was seventh with a time of 9.17. 

60-meter dash

Deja Young was the lone Shocker that ran in the women's 60-meter dash, running it in a time of 7.67.

600-yard run

Kelsey Lathrop and Sarah Wright gave the Shockers two top-five finishes in the 600-yard run. While Lathrop finished third with a time of 1:27.66, Sarah Wright finished fourth when she ran a time of 1:29.37.

Michayla Zweygardt's time of 1:35.67 was good for seventh, and Emily Hahn (who ran unattached) ran 1:34.60, which earned her fifth place.

1000-meter run

Wichita State placed four in the top six during the women's 1000-meter run. Tiffany Christensen finished second (2:59.28), Emilea Finley was third (3:02.54), Paige Wells was fifth (3:13.35) and Kendra Schoening (3:15.04) placed sixth.

800-meter run

Savannah Wright was the only Wichita State student-athlete to run in the women's 800-meter run, and she finished third with a time of 2:20.02.

200-meter dash

Nikki Larch-Miller was third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.88 to lead Wichita State. Lauren Pickens was 18th when she ran 27.41.

Distance Medley

Wichita State's 'A' distance medley team of Finley, Sarah Wright, Zweygardt and Kayla Deighan won the distance medley with a time of 12:19.58, winning the race by a whole second.

The Shockers' 'B' team of Lycia Hollon, Angie Vailas, Paige Wells and Kendra Schoening was fifth when running their distance medley in 13:16.72.

4x400-meter relay

Four teams participated in the 4x400-meter relay, with the 'A' team of Nora Zajovics, Taylor Thomas, Taylor Larch-Miller and Nikki Larch-Miller having the highest finish of the Wichita State teams with a third place finish and a time of 3:52.33.

WSU's 'B' team of Jenny Pinkston, Borman, Cassidy Downing and Young was sixth with a time of 4:06.51 as WSU's 'D' team of Tiffany Christensen, Ninaa Edwards, Bailey Bahner and Ximena Cazenave was seventh when they ran a combined time of 4:12.63.

WSU's 'C' team of Kelsey Lathrop, Jaclyn Weber, Sierra Hays and Emily Doffing was ninth when running a time of 4:13.91.

Men

3000-meter run

Gage Garcia was the lone Shocker in the 3000-meter run and placed sixth with a time of 8:45.91.

60-meter hurdles

Jacob James was third with a time of 8.29 to pace the Shockers. Jon Martin was fifth when he ran 8.59, and Taylor Cross earned sixth when he ran his 60-meter hurdles in 8.63. 

60-meter dash

Grant Ralston finished fifth in the 60-meter dash when he ran it in 7.09 as the only Shocker in the event.

One-Mile Run

Brady Johnson won the mile run when he ran a time of 4:18.44. Casey Nightengale was eighth with a time of 4:30.93, and Larkin placed ninth with a time of 4:32.85.

600-yard run

Cordell Goering paced the Shockers in the 600-yard run. His time of 1:17.13 earned him sixth place, as Stan Skwarlo earned eighth with a time of 1:18.41.

1000-meter run

Robbie Martinez-Garcia won the men's 1000-meter run when he ran a time of 2:28.98. Paul Raymond was the only other Shocker to run in the men's 100-meter run race, and he finished fourth after running 2:34.19. 

800-meter run

Ryan Hocker led the way for Wichita State when running the men's 800-meter dash in 1:54.75, finishing third. Drew Johnson was 18th with a time of 2:20.57.

400-meter dash

Alex Reed led the Shockers in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.02 to place fifth. Rhys Powell (50.37) and Tucker Davis (50.39) were seventh and eighth respectively, and Colton Mays was 14th with a time of 52.07. 

200-meter dash

Tate Annis finished third with a time of 22.13, pacing the Shockers in the 200-meter dash. Tyler Gillen was 17th with a time of 23.28, and Erick Ngaiza was 19th when running a 23.62.

Distance Medley

The Shockers' 'A' team took second in the men's distance medley when the team of Skwarlo, Hocker, Robbie Martinez-Garcia and Justin Scott ran a combined time of 10:30.58.

4x400-meter relay

Wichita State's 'A' team of Rhys Powell, Jonathan Duvall, Tucker Davis and Alex Reed finished second in the men's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:20.71. The 'B' team of Paul Raymond, Jon Martin, Jacob James and Cordell Goering earned a fifth place finish with a time of 3:32.45.

WSU's 'C' team of Taylor Cross, Seth Buck, John Nicholas and Kyle Troxler was seventh at 3:36.02.

The Shockers' next meet is on Jan. 16 when they host the Shocker Prelude, their first home meet of the season.
