TF: WSU Women Claim Shocker Prelude Team Title

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State women's track and field team collected the team title with 160 points, while the men's team finished second with 117.5 on Friday at the Shocker Prelude held in the Heskett Center.

Emporia State claimed first place with 145.5 points on the men's side, while Friends finished third with 115 and Butler Community College in fourth with 52. Rounding out the women's standings was Emporia State with 142 points, Friends with 103 and Butler CC with 39.

Senior Emily Cook got the meet started on a strong note by winning the women's weight throw with a distance of 16.15m. Junior Sadie Suenram came in fifth with a throw of 15.07m. Cook then recorded a fourth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 13.18m.

In the women's pole vault, Kaylee Eklund recorded the top mark at 12-1.50, while Amanda Gardner (personal best 11-1.75) and McKenzee Kroeschell (11-1.75) came in third and fourth, respectively. The vault by Eklund ranks fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference this season.

Freshman Meghan Holmes placed second in the women's triple jump with a new personal best of 36-10.25. Later, Bailey Bahner took second in the women's high jump after clearing 4-11.75.

Senior Cassidy Downing took home a first place finish in the women's 60m hurdles with a winning and personal best time of 9.10. Downing later recorded another first place finish in the 600m followed closely by her teammate Michayla Zweygardt who finished second. In the 60m dash finals, junior Marli Bartlett ran a 7.89 to finish in second. Wichita State recorded a win in the mile after Emily Hornbeck crossed the finish line in a time of 5:20.88.

Wichita State registered a 1-2 finish in the 800m with Paige Wells (2:24.57) taking first and Kendra Schoening (2:29.17) placing second.

On the men's side, Junior Weston Cottrell set a personal best in the men's weight throw with a mark of 61-7.75 to win the event. His throw ranks fifth in the MVC this season behind teammate Taylor Goldsmith.

Sophomore John Nicholas claimed a second place finish in the men's long jump with a jump of 21-1.50. Fellow sophomore Zach Loesch also recorded a second place finish. Loesch finished second in the men's shot put with a throw of 52-3.75.

The Shockers recorded five of the top six finishes in the men's pole vault, led by Andrew Pope who won the event at 15-7.25. His vault ranks third in the MVC so far this season. Josh Phillips (15-1.50) came in third, while Kyle Troxler (14-7.50) and Tyler Knight (14-7.50) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Jon Martin crossed the finish line in second place in the men's 60m hurdles in a personal best time of 8.49. In the mile run, Casey Nightengale led the way for WSU with a time of 4:23.45 to claim first place. Kilian Schreiner (4:24.76) and Justin Scott (4:25.45) finished third and fifth. Freshman Stan Skwarlo just edged Friends' Jesse Lyle for the win in the 800m with a time of 1:57.36.

Members of the Wichita State track & field team will compete in the Wichita State/Kansas State Triangular tomorrow at the Ahern Fieldhouse in Manhattan, Kan. Competition begins at 11 a.m. with field events followed by running events at 1 p.m.
