MTen: No. 69 Shocks Defeat UMKC 6-1

WICHITA, Kan. – No. 69 Wichita State defeated UMKC 6-1 on Thursday inside the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex at WSU's campus in Wichita. Thursday's win improves the Shockers to 9-6 while dropping the Kangaroos to 2-12.

Doubles play began when Ilija Cuic/Jocelyn Devilliers of No. 69 Wichita State won 8-1 over Conner Edwards/Vinh Pham of UMKC at No. 2 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Tomislav Gregurovic/Tin Ostojic gave the Shockers the doubles point and the 1-0 dual-match lead when they took down UMKC's Tomas Patino/Mike Psarros 8-5.

Although the doubles point was already clinched, No. 69 Wichita State's Guillermo Nicol/Guillermo de Vilchez earned an 8-3 victory against UMKC's Andrey Smirnov/Uldis Gaismins at No. 3 doubles.

Ostojic (No. 20 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Central Singles Rankings) earned a 6-0, 6-2 win against Smirnov to increase the Shocker lead to 2-0 while at No. 2 singles. Devilliers took down Jai Grewal 6-1, 6-3 to extend No. 69 Wichita State's dual-match lead to 3-0 at No. 6 singles.

At No. 3 singles, Gregurovic pushed the Shocker lead to 4-0 over the Roos after a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over Psarros. Gaismins gave UMKC their only point of the day when he defeated Nicol at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-4, to cut the Shocker advantage to 4-1.

At No. 4 singles, de Vilchez won 7-5, 6-2 against Pham that pushed No. 69 Wichita State's lead to 5-1, and Cuic finished the dual-match with a 6-2, 7-5 win on No. 1 singles against Patino. This gave the Shockers the 6-1 dual-match win.

No. 69 Wichita State is back in action Saturday, March 15 inside the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex at WSU's campus in Wichita when they take on Air Force at noon. Live stats will be available, and results will be posted after the completion of play.
