WICHITA, Kan.- The No. 68 Wichita State women's tennis team
moved to 14-5 overall and 3-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference after defeating
Southern Illinois, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis
Complex.
The Shocker woman were able to give themselves a cushion
early when Montse Blasco Fernandez and Veronika Blaskova defeated Anita Lee and
Anastacia Simons, 9-7, and Lutfiana Budiharto and Carla Venticinque defeated
Natasha Tomishima and Jennifer Dien, 9-7, in two hard fought doubles contests.
Winning two out of three doubles matches gave the Shockers a 1-0 lead early.
The Shockers did not let off the pedal in singles play,
winning all six contests. The match was clenched when sophomore Satjaporn
Mahajaroenkul defeated Ariadna Cairo Baza, 6-4, 6-0.
In the number six position, Carla Venticinque came back
after dropping the first set to defeat Gisela Cairo Baza, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. The
win moved Venticinque to 6-0 on the week, after winning all the matches she was
involved in against Kansas State on Thursday and Evansville on Saturday.
The Shocker women are back in action next weekend when they
travel to Normal, Ill. to take on Illinois State on Saturday, April 14th.
The next day, they will head to Peoria, Ill. for a match against Bradley.
