WICHITA, Kan. - The
freshman duo of Alie Decker and Michaela Dapprich combined for 34 points to
power Wichita State to a non-conference victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 81-43,
Saturday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.
Decker and Dapprich, playing their most significant minutes
of the season following early season injuries, set career highs with 19 points
and 15 points respectively in the dominating effort over the Lady Lions (2-5) of the
SWAC Conference. Due in large part to the freshman duo the Shockers bench outscored
the Lady Lions bench, 58-19.
The Shockers (5-5) used a 17-2 first half run including seven
points from Dapprich and a 3-pointer from Decker to distance themselves from
the Lady Lions, 21-7, with 10:20 remaining in the half. The run propelled the
Shockers to a 37-17 lead heading into halftime. Wichita State shot 48-percent
in the half and held a 24-3 advantage in bench scoring.
Senior point guard Jasmine Jones had a career-high eight
assists against zero turnovers in setting up the Shocker offense.
While the offense was clicking on all cylinders the Shockers
relied equally on their defense holding Arkansas-Pine Bluff to 33-percent
shooting and forcing 26 turnovers resulting in 29 points.
The 38-point margin of victory fell two points shy of tying
the largest margin of victory at home set in a 95-55 defeat of Texas-Pan
American on Dec. 19, 2010.
Lakendra Marsh and Chigoziany Okwumbua each tallied 11
points to lead Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
The Shockers are next in action when they travel to Dallas,
Texas to take on SMU at 12 p.m. on Sat., Dec. 22 before returning home to take
