MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. - Wichita State put three men's golfers
in the Top 15 and rest in fifth place of the 15-team VCU Shootout at Hermitage
Country Club.
The Shockers pulled into a tie with Iowa State and Virginia
at 13-under heading towards the back nine. The 22nd-ranked Cavaliers took off after that and
sported a 15-under 273 team score in the second round. WSU checked in with a 279 (-9) in the
afternoon session and a 36-hole total 566 (-10) for the day.
Junior Hunter Sparks had a brilliant opening round and his
even par in the second round kept him in the Top 10 with a 4-under 140. Sophomore Calvin Pearson tied for 11th
with a 141 (-3) and junior Rafael Becker followed closely at 142 (-2) to tie
for 14th.
Tyler Gann bounced back from a rough first round to shoot
4-under (68) in the afternoon and pull into a tie for 28th with an
overall score of 144 (even).
Iowa State's Scott Fernandez eagled the 11th hole
in both rounds and holds a one-stroke lead for first over Virginia's Denny
McCarthy. Fernandez shot a 66-69
for a 9-under 135 and McCarthy registered a 70-66 for an 8-under 136.
McCarthy and his nationally-ranked teammate Ben Kohles
boosted Virginia atop the team board with a sparkling 559 (-17). No. 41 Virginia Tech is in second
place, three strokes back of their in-state rival.
Last year the Shockers placed 13th at the VCU
Shootout with no individual placing in the Top 30.
The tournament concludes with an 18-hole round on
Tuesday.
