ST. LOUIS -- Tonya Nero set a new personal record and moved into third on the Wichita State University all-time list in the women's 1,500-meter run as the Maracas, Trinidad and Tobago native was selected by the Missouri Valley Conference as its Women's Track Athlete-of-the-Week for April 4-10.
It is the second MVC award this season for Nero after the senior distance runner was named the Women's Scholar Athlete-of-the-Week (Mar. 20-27). Audacia Moore won last week's MVC Women's Track Athlete-of-the-Week award.
Nero was one of several Shocker athletes who set a new personal best at the Sacramento State University Mondo Mid-Major Challenge this past Saturday, April 9. Nero, who set a previous personal best of 4:28.70, came in with
a time of 4:22.74 to win the event and move into third in Shocker
history. Nero's time places her ninth in the NCAA
West Region and tops amongst Missouri Valley competition.
Nero and the Shockers will host the 62nd annual K.T. Woodman Classic this week with the decathlon/heptathlon kicking the event off on Wednesday, April 13, at 12:30 p.m. Nero will be running in the women's 5,000-meter run on Friday night which follows the men's 1,500-meter run where Olympian Christian Smith (Kansas State alum) will be partcipating.
