Shocks Pounce on Panthers, 6-1

WICHITA - Wichita State's women's tennis team picked up their second conference win in the first dual of a Saturday double header, defeating Northern Iowa, 6-1.

After opening Missouri Valley play against Creighton in January, the Shocks wasted no time in their second conference dual of the season, wrapping up the win in less than three hours.

In doubles play, WSU quickly snatched up the point with an altered lineup that swept all three matches. Shocker seniors Florentina Hanisch and Lenore Lazaroiu reunited at the No. 2 position, winning handily over Jessica Kunzelmann and Sampada Kanade, 8-1.

Sophomore Lutfiana Budiharto and senior Stephanie Dalmacio also teamed up again on Saturday and overwhelmed Laia Gonzalez-Garrido and Talia Jang-Stewart, 8-1. Playing together for the first time since the Missouri Valley Individual Championships, freshman Iasmine Carpen and sophomore Delia Damaschin grabbed the 8-6 victory from Stefannia Sampaio and Phoebe Walker, 8-6.

"We came out and set the tone in doubles," head coach Colin Foster said. "We played very solid and executed well. We've played a lot of good doubles, but we've also been streaky, too. So we're just switching up the lineup to keep it fresh and find new combos of what works."

The Shocks kept up the pace in singles play, taking all but one match in straight sets. No. 49 Lutfiana Budiharto got things started with a quick, 6-2, 6-0 win against Phoebe Walker at the top spot in the lineup.

Hanisch surrendered just one game to Jang-Stewart at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-0. Lazaroiu clinched the Shocker victory with her 6-1, 6-4 win in the No. 3 position.

Sampaio was the only Panther to come out with a win on Saturday morning, as she got the best of sophomore Lily Wakim in the No. 6 match, 6-1, 6-1.

Dalmacio and Damaschin wrapped up the win with victories at the No. 2 and 4 positions, respectively. Dalmacio topped Gonzalez-Garrido, 6-3, 6-3 while Damaschin battled her way through a tough second set to come out on top, 6-1, 7-5.

The Shocks are in action again tonight when they take on Marquette in Wichita State's annual Serve for the Cure event. The match is slated for 6 p.m. at the Wichita Country Club, but fans are welcome to come at 5:30 to purchase chances to win special items and place their $5 per ace pledges. Each can be purchased throughout the match.
