EAST PEORIA, Ill.- Wichita State (16-12, 8-9) fell behind early but rallied in the second half but fell, 58-55, in the final seconds at Bradley (15-12, 11-6), Thursday night.
Haleigh Lankster led the Shockers with 12 points, while
Marisah Henderson had 11 points.
Chynna Turner and
Morgan Boyd each reached double-figures with 10 points each. The Braves were paced by Raisa Taylor's 19 points and Jenny Van Kirk's 11 points.
The BU zone defense frustrated the Shockers early on and helped the Braves build a 11-0 lead. WSU missed its first 10 shots before
Sheena Johnson's layup put the Shockers on the scoreboard at the 14:50 mark.
The Braves did the majority of their damage at the free throw line, hitting 7-of-8 to help build a 15-5 lead. Outside of Taylor, no BU player hit a shot from the field until Van Kirk's 3-pointer made it 18-5 with just more than 10 minutes to play in the half.
But the Shockers started to heat up late in the half, spurred by hot shooting from
Morgan Boyd and stellar defense. Boyd hit two 3-pointers and a 15-foot jumper to fuel a 16-5 WSU run to end the half that trimmed the BU lead to just three, 31-28. The Shockers held the Braves to just one field goal in the final six minutes of the half.
WSU used a full-court press and trap to force 13 BU turnovers in the half. After starting red-hot from the field, WSU cooled the Braves down to 36-percent shooting and outside of Taylor, no BU player hit more than one shot in the period.
The difference came at the free throw line, where the Braves outscored WSU 14-5.
The second half started like the first, with BU rebuilding its lead with a 10-2 run in the early minutes. The Shockers tried to climb back in it with 3-point shooting.
Marisah Henderson hit back-to-back 3-pointers, the second of which was banked-in from the wing, to cut the BU lead to seven.
Minutes later the Shockers went on a 13-2 run to take their first lead of the game, 52-51, with 1:45 to play. BU quickly raced down the floor, drew a foul and sank a pair of free throws to reclaim a one-point lead.
The teams traded 3-pointers in the final minute and BU took a three-point lead on a Taylor layup with 24 seconds left.
WSU had one last chance, but Lankster's 3-point attempt at the buzzer fell short for a 58-55 final.
The Shockers were outrebounded, 46-28, and outscored at the free throw line, 22-6. WSU was able to climb back in the game by scoring 25 points off of 22 BU turnovers.
WSU is back in action on Sat., March 6 as the team travels to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for a matchup with UNI at 3:05 p.m.
