WICHITA - The Shocker men's tennis team made the most of a last-minute match against cross-town rival Newman on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping the Jets, 7-0.

Making up for a scheduling conflict earlier in the season, Head Coach Brad Louderback was able to set up the match, giving the teams their sixth meeting in program history.

Wichita State got the afternoon rolling when they captured the doubles point to take the 1-0 lead. Freshmen Valentin Mihai and Matheus Pereira grabbed the 8-2 victory against Juraj Surovy and Kevin Klein in the N0. 2 match to seal the point. Senior Jonathan Obrist and sophomore David Cavalcanti notched the first win of the day, knocking off Nathan Peters and Daniel Dromirov, 8-1.

The junior duo of Jimmy Dunseith and Chris King gave the Shockers a tough match at the No. 1 doubles spot, battling junior Vlad Marinescu and redshirt freshman Sven Kasper until the Shocks locked down for the 8-6 win.

"It was good we were able to play a local team," Louderback said. "We played a good match, especially at No. 1 doubles."

In singles competition, WSU got straight to business, winning every match in straight sets. Louderback gave his bottom half of the lineup the chance to play the top half of an experienced Jets lineup.

Playing at No. 6, Marinescu did not surrender a game against Dromirov his 6-0, 6-0 victory. Kasper worked quickly as well to defeat Peters, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot. Cavalcanti's 6-1, 6-0 win at the top spot clinched the win for the Shocks.

Mihai and Pereia each picked up wins against Klein and King respectively at No. 4 and 5. Junior Adrian Chermaci handled the toughest singles match against Surovy, who fought back until Chermaci closed the deal, 7-5, 6-2.

The Shockers return to the road again this weekend as they head to Texas to take on Texas-Arlington on Feb. 19. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
