ST. LOUIS -- Junior Tonya Nero set a new 5000 meter record for her home country of Trinidad and Tobago and moved into second place on the Wichita State University all-time list, garnering her the Missouri Valley Conference Track Athlete of the Week as announced on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
Nero joins Audacia Moore and Chris Dickman as Shockers who have received athlete of the week honors.
At the Iowa State Classic, Nero placed seventh overall in a time of 16:39.92, an NCAA provisional mark that trails only the 16:11.77 set by Kellyn Johnson last season in the Shocker record books. Nero's time in the 5000 meter run not only set a new personal best for her but also moved her into first on her country's all-time list which was set back in 1995.
Nero and the WSU track & field team will be at two meets this coming week as the Shockers travel to Lincoln, Neb., on Friday, Feb. 19, for the Nebraska Tune-Up. Wichita State will then head to Manhattan, Kan., for the Kansas State Open on Saturday, Feb., 20.
