ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Wichita State's women's tennis team won its 10th match of the season, and its second-consecutive road match, defeating New Mexico, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the UNM Tennis Complex in Albuquerque.
In one of the most intense doubles competitions this season, the Shockers won two of three matches, and took a 1-0 advantage in the match by winning the doubles point. The Shockers' No. 2 duo of Lutfiana Budiharto and Lenore Lazaroiu knocked off the Lobo tandem of Maria Sotirchos and Mackenzie White, 8-4, to win the No. 2 match, while Florentina Hanisch and Laryssa Ferreira held off New Mexico's Elaine Bourdages and Anya Villanueva-Forte, 8-6, to win the No. 3 match, and secure the doubles point.
The Shockers' only loss in doubles play came in the No. 1 match where New Mexico's Ola Abou-Zekry and Emma Hayman defeated WSU's Anna Egorova and Stephanie Dalmacio in a tightly-contested 8-6, decision.
Wichita State's lower two-thirds of the line-up held its own in singles play. Lutfiana Budiharto dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Emma Hayman in the No. 3 match, while Torrie Browning earned a 7-5, 6-2 win over Victoria Tessmar in the No. 4 match. The No. 5 match belonged to Florentina Hanisch, who notched a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ashley Bonner, and Lenore Lazaroiu cruised to a straight-set, 6-4, 6-2 win over Maria Sotirchos.
It was the another verse of the same song in singles play, as Anna Egorova and Stephanie Dalmacio were the victims of WSU's only singles losses. Egorova dropped the No. 1 match in a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Ola Abou-Zekry, while Dalmacio suffered a 6-4, 6-1 setback at the hands of Mackenzie White.
The Shockers improve to 10-2 with the win, while the Lobos fall to 3-8. Wichita State's next dual match is March 27 when they open the 2009 Shocker Classic against Louisville. First serve is slated for 2:30 p.m.
