TULSA, Okla. -- The Wichita State men's tennis team opened its spring season with a 6-1 loss to the No. 12-ranked Tulsa Golden Hurricane Saturday evening at TU's Case Tennis Center. Freshman David Cavalcanti picked up the Shockers' only win in singles play.
In singles play, Tulsa standout Arnau Brugues proved to be too much for Shocker freshman Michal Zawadzki, taking a 6-0, 6-1 decision in the No. 1 singles match, while TU's Victor Kolik downed Jonathan Obrist, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 2 match. Tulsa's Alberto Sottocorno and Ashley Watling won the No. 3 and No. 4 matches, respectively. Sottocorno downed WSU's Vlad Marinescu, 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 3 match, while Watling ousted Adrian Chermaci, 6-2, 6-1, and Ross Cunningham defeated Scott McCormick, 7-6, 6-7, 10-5.
Cavalcanti's win came against James Seagraves in a straight set, 6-2, 6-3, decision.
The Shockers will be back in action Sunday morning with a 9:30 a.m. match scheduled against Sacramento State. The match will also be played at Tulsa's Case Tennis Center.
