Shockers Knock Off No. 52 Nebraska for Fourth Straight Win

WICHITA, Kan. — After two road wins earlier in the week, Wichita State returned home to beat No. 52 Nebraska, 5-2, on Sunday at Genesis Rock Road.
 
The Shockers (8-7) earned their fourth consecutive win with the victory over Nebraska (8-3). It was Wichita State's first win over a ranked Power Four opponent since Jan. 24, 2016, when it defeated No. 51 South Carolina, 5-2.
 
In doubles, Pablo Roche Alcaya and Zaid Al Mashni gave the Shockers the early edge with a 6-3 win at No. 1. Nebraska answered with a 6-3 victory at No. 2 over Ilias Worthington and Rodrigo Cruz, leaving the doubles point to be decided at No. 3.
 
At No. 3, Felix Bockelmann-Evans and Alejandro Jacome prevailed, 6-3, to give Wichita State the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
 
At No. 1 singles, Worthington got the Shockers off to a strong start with a commanding 6-0, 6-3 victory, putting Wichita State ahead 2-0.
 
Following Worthington's win, Alcaya secured his second victory of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 4 to increase the Shocker lead to 3-0.
 
Nebraska earned its first point of the afternoon with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win over Cruz at No. 6 to remain in striking distance.
 
No. 103-ranked Al Mashni recovered after dropping his first set, 6-4, to win the final two sets, 6-0 and 6-1, clinching the match for the Shockers.
 
With the team result decided, the Huskers defeated Luke Bracks at No. 5, 6-1, 5-7, 6-0, for their final point of the day.
 
In the last match on court, Jacome battled back from a 6-4 opening-set loss to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 to close out the afternoon.
