WSU v. UNI--Quotes

WICHITA, Kan.--Coach Gregg Marshall and Coach Ben Jacobson discuss WSU's victory over UNI on Saturday night.

Marshall on the victory: “That one was fun. I just thought that we played very, very well in a game that was very meaningful and against a good basketball team. They are well coached and have a lot of confidence and swagger. It seemed, other than some circus plays by the young guys, that we had it pretty much in hand.”

Marshall on why this game was meaningful: “Going into this week we talked about, the more you win, the more pressure mounts and the more meaningful games become. We're literally fighting to be out of Thursday, and even get a decent seed in the top six. In order to do that, we have to win. Then if you win, the pressure mounts more and more. They love that. They seem to really enjoy the mounting pressure.”

Marshall on Clevin Hannah's performance this season against UNI: “He's a guy that enjoys competing at the highest level. He's a little fella, but he played big tonight. When the ball left his hand the first time, we actually called his number for a few plays. We don't normally do that.”

Marshall on beating the Valley's top teams at home: “Basically what we've done is proven to ourselves?if no one else?that we can compete with anyone. The best teams in our league. We now are tied for fifth, but today we would have the tiebreaker because we split with Evansville, who we were tied with, and beat Northern Iowa, which they have not done. That would be the tiebreaker, and no matter who those three teams are, we've beaten all three of them.”

Marshall on the atmosphere around this meaningful game: “We talked about it, we knew as a team that this could be the biggest game in a couple years. I know it was bigger than any game last year, and up to this point (this game) was the most meaningful game this year. The more you win, the more games like this you'll have in the future. That's a good sign because they seem to really cherish that opportunity.”

Northern Iowa Coach Ben Jacobson on the game: “Wichita played a very good basketball game. Obviously, they came out of the gates and played a great first half. They deserve a lot of credit for the game they played in the first half, and they made some good, tough plays in the second half. They did a nice job tonight.”

Sophomore J.T. Durley on this being the biggest win of his WSU career: “This is the biggest win for us. Our coaches explained this is the biggest game we've even had since the 06-07 season.”

Senior Ramon Clemente on WSU being the dangerous team to face in the MVC tournament: “I hope we're that dangerous team that the coaches aren't looking forward to playing. But we've got to look at it the same way. A lot of teams in the Valley are tough. Indiana State is like the last place team and they beat (UNI) too. Everybody is just beating up on each other right now, so everybody's going to be dangerous.”
