Central Michigan got on the board with a run in the top of the first on a pair of singles from Rhett Goodmiller and Matt Faiman. Goodmiller posted the first hit of the game on the first pitch he saw from Shocker starter
Jordan Cooper (0-1), roping a single to right center before stealing second and coming home on Faiman's single through the right side, giving the Chippewas an early 1-0 edge.
The Shocks answered in the bottom of the opening frame in exciting fashion after
Kevin Hall reached on a leadoff infield single before stealing second. A single by
Ryan Jones sent Hall to third before the sophomore came home on a double steal that sent Jones safely into second after
Will Baez went down swinging.
WSU took its first lead of the day in the second when
Cody Lassley reached on a leadoff double and went to third on a balk from CMU starter Dan Taylor (1-0).
Taylor Brown then slapped an 0-2 pitch through the right side to bring home Lassley and give the Shockers a 2-1 lead after two.
Taylor gave up three earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work to pick up the win. He walked two and struck out eight on 109 pitches on the afternoon.
CMU answered WSU's run with one of its own in the fourth when Casey Ingle ripped a double down the right line and advanced to third after a wild pitch from Cooper. Dale Cornstubble brought Ingle home with a sacrifice fly to tie the game, 2-2 after four.
The Chippewas broke the game open with four runs in the fifth after a shaky start to the inning by Cooper, who put the first two batters of the frame on base with back-to-back walks. Cooper settled down to strike out Faiman on four pitches before turning the ball over to sophomore
Justin Kemp. Cooper finished his day with four earned runs in 4.1 innings of work, scattering six hits while walking two and striking out five in the loss.
Kemp came in and hit James Teas to load the bases and CMU capitalized, as Ingle sent all three runners home after scoring a double off the right field wall. William Arnold brought home Ingle a batter later with a single back up the middle, completing the Chippewas' big inning to give CMU a 6-2 edge.
The Chippewas added four more runs in the sixth on three doubles before the Shockers began cutting into the deficit.
The Shockers got a run in the sixth on a
Taylor Brown double that scored
Taylor Gilmore to bring WSU within 10-3.

Brown got things rolling with a one-out double before
Kevin Hall reached on an error.
Ryan Jones then walked to load the bases and Baez picked up an RBI when he took a pitch to the arm that sent Brown home. Baez went to second on a wild pitch that scored Hall to close the deficit to 10-5. After
Clint McKeever struck out, O'Brien drove in two on a two-out single to left that scored Baez and Jones, and brought the Shockers back into the game, 10-8.
Central Michigan added plenty of insurance by batting around and putting the game out of reach in a six-run ninth. A
Kevin Hall single in the ninth brought home WSU's final run of the day as WSU's rally fell short.
WSU opens the home portion of the 2009 schedule when the Shocks host North Dakota State next weekend in a three-game series that begins at 3 p.m., Friday at Eck Stadium - Home of Tyler Field.
