Shocks Roll in Day One

Evansville, Ind. -- The Shockers started the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships on a hot streak, posting a combined 3-1 singles record and a 2-0 doubles mark on Friday.

The main draw singles competition is split into seven flights, each with a consolation bracket. Main draw doubles play is sectioned into three flights.

WSU entered seniors Florentina Hanisch and Lenore Lazroiu as a doubles team and into the singles brackets as well. Sophomore Lily Wakim and senior Stephanie Dalmacio teamed up for doubles action.

Dalmacio topped Kate Chybowski of host-school Evansville, 6-2, 7-5, to advance to the semi-finals of flight No. 1 on Saturday. Lazaroiu followed up on the senior leadership front, blowing past Creighton's Lauren Mastro, 6-0, 6-2. Hanisch completed the senior trio when she bumped Laia Gonzalez of UNI into the consolation bracket, 6-2, 6-4.

Wakim wasn't quite as fortunate after falling behind early to UNI's Jessica Kunzelmann and was unable recover, dropping the match 6-0, 6-0. She faced Mary McMullen of Creighton in the first-round of the flight 4 singles consolation bracket on Friday. The pair kept the match tight, each battling back and forth, but McMullen surfaced in the end, 6-4, 5-7, 10-1, to end Wakim's run in the tournament.

In the meantime, Dalmacio will match up against Anika Kiss from Illinois State on Saturday. Lazaroiu and Southern Illinois' Vishakha Sheoran are also slated for their respective bracket's semi-final round on Saturday. Hanisch will keep the trend against Drake's Alexandra Patterson.

On the doubles side, Hanisch and Lazaroiu smoked Creighton's duo of Tess Reddin and Sarah Cadwallader, 8-0. Playing together for the first time in competition, Wakim and Dalmacio defeated Bradley's Kelly Donohue and Jessica Buterbaugh, 8-2. Both tandems move to Saturday's quarterfinals.

Weather dealys have caused play to be moved back to 10 am on Saturday. Results can be found here and will be posted to GoShockers.com as they become available.
