WICHITA, Kan.--Head Coach Gregg Marshall sat down with Wichita's local media to answer questions about Wednesday night's game against Southern IIllinois.
Marshall on team's mental psyche: “We'll be able Wednesday. Right now we're grinding it out and practicing as hard as we can. We had a pretty good practice yesterday. Winning is something that will help bring confidence. That's obviously something we need to do.”
Marshall on playing another 0-3 team in the Missouri Valley Conference: “I'd rather neither one of us be 0-3, if that meant we weren't 0-3. It could be good and bad. They could be angry and disappointed. They have been pretty doggone good this decade, they've been a very successful program. They are going through a lot of the same things we're going through.”
Marshall on his team being in the middle of the rebuilding process: “It's not something that I want to get used to. I don't think the players enjoy it, but it's a fact. When you lose those three seniors from last year, you've got to bring in a lot of new players. That's what we did. I'm hoping that this is the baseline, as bad as it's going to get, and that we'll get better from here. When you look at it next year, both kids that are playing some five this year will return. Gabe Blair is really good, and he could replace a four-man next year. The three-men are both back, the two-men are back and the point guards are back?and will all have a year's experience. As long as they keep getting better and go through the natural maturation process, we should be better. Then we've got to try to get better this year, as well. That's what we're doing.”
Marshall on the positive moments he's seen in the previous three games: “Garrett Stutz went to work against Bradley. I thought it was the best game of his career. Toure' Murry hit big shot after big shot against Bradley down the stretch. Clevin Hannah scored 11-straight points to begin Northern Iowa game. I thought that we played as well as or better than Creighton for the first 19 minutes of the first half the other night. It was the very first Missouri Valley road game for most of those guys.”
