WICHITA, Kan. -- The Wichita State women's tennis team opened Missouri Valley Conference play with a bang Saturday, defeating Evansville 7-0 at WSU's Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. The win was the Shockers 17th-straight in the all-time series against Evansville.
The Shockers jumped out to the early advantage with a sweep of the doubles competition. Stephanie Dalmacio and Laryssa Ferreira defeated Evansville's Kate Chybowski and Pin Sorenson 8-7 (7-5) in the No. 1 match, while Anna Egorova and Lenore Lazaroiu defeated Evansville's Riette Kotze and Sara Wilhoite 8-1 in the No. 2 match. Florentina Hanisch and Torrie Browning followed suit in the No. 3 match with an 8-1 win over Evansville's Lisa Kawamoto and Stephanie Millis.
WSU continued its sweep in singles play. Torrie Browning wasted no time in taking the No. 5 match, cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 win over EU's Allie Cox. Anna Egorova followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Sara Wilhoite in the No. 3 match, while Laryssa Ferreira claimed a 6-1, 6-4 decision over EU's Stephanie Millis in the No. 6 match. In the No. 2 match, Florentina Hanisch took a 6-2, 6-3 decision from EU's Kate Chybowski, while Lenore Lazaroiu defeated Pin Sorenson in the No. 4 match, 6-2, 6-3.
Stephanie Dalmacio concluded the Shocker sweep with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Lisa Kawamoto in the No. 1 match.
With the win, the Shockers improve to 8-6 on the season, while improving to 1-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference. They are back in action Sunday morning with a 10 a.m. match against Southern Illinois. Results will be posted on www.goshockers.com as they become available.
